I agree completely, V6 racing can be expensive, there's just more stuff to go wrong in the motor, they have intake problems, they have timing chain problems, etc etc...
But if the class is a mix of 4 and 6, with the 6s getting a weight handicap or whatever--why not? Let the guys with the V6s go through the trials and tribulations and maybe build something that works.
I have said in the past we need a true entry-level class at Delaware, and John's come up with one. He's also come up with one that might be different and unique and, just maybe, more affordable than most "Pure Stock" classes in Ontario.
Finding Mustangs to build for pure stock is getting harder and harder, and 240sx' and Volv 240s and stuff like that were never easy to find in the first place. But how many shitty old Cavaliers, Escorts, Tempos, K-cars, Civics, Accords, Golfs etc are lying around? A lot of dirt tracks in the states have created FWD-only classes, and the car counts are GIGANTIC. Might start a bit slow at Delaware, but it's planning for the future, when the Mustangs (like the Pinto, Vega, etc) are gone.
And yes, of course RWD is a performance advantage. A gigantic one. Better balance and better weight distribution. All things are rarely equal, but in theory, two identical cars, one RWD and one FWD, the RWD one will handle better, grip better and be faster on the low end. The driven wheels aren't doing the turning.
There are FWD cars that run with/beat Mustangs of course, but not BECAUSE they're FWD. They do it because they make more power, or because they've figured out some chassis tricks to overcome their disadvantage.
Not a bad idea to start with John, you asked, we all responded, and you came up with an idea you can work with. Definitely don't have the resources to show up this year, but I might be able to get some friends together to run one of these next season!
ok our team runs a 4 highly modified mustang in the regular enduro just to run 25 second laps. they last time we where there there was a stock sunfire and it spanked our ass i dont see no advantaged to a stock suspension mustang your car counts would go up 60% for this race but thats IMO.
and i dont think the track would be to big for a 4 cylinder division if they could do a few things to make there cars work better. keep and eye out to see whats on the card for the show im sure you guys will be surprised ;D ;D
You are correct sir. FWD cars have beat my rear wheel drive all season long. The advantage of RWD is a tiny spec compared to the advantage of pure power, which a lot of these V6 cars have.
Which means the rules are at fault and they should've weighed the V6 cars down more. 😉
Banning cars to appease whiners is stupid. Every car that you ban, the next one down the line evolves as "the car to beat". What do you do ban them? Then the next one then the next one. Racers are smart and they will always figure something out. Why don't you ban all Japanese FWD drive cars that have the engine on the left side. Talk about an advantage compared to American cars.
