OK, I may be crucified over this but just give it a thought.
What is more important to a race fan a fast bunch of cars or a good race.
I think we would all agree, 2 wide racing, with passing instead of bumping cars out of the way to get a spot. Heck if we wanted to see cars go straight and fast we would go to the drags.
Ok so again as I said just a thought.
What would happen if we slowed all the cars down 1 - 2 seconds per class. Would that not bring back the 2 wide racing we all are wanting and all complaning isn't there since there is only one groove in the turns at Delaware.
Now the question is how do you slow them down. Gear rules, weight rules, hate to say it restrictor plates.
So again don't crucify me just give some positive feed back.
I think for the LMs, if they went back to some derivative of the 2005 rules, they might get the side-by-side racing back, or at least more passing. Ultimately a new surface, with variable banking, would do the trick, but for now getting more rubber onto the track might help as well....I've seen it where some tracks have some sort of trailer that they put used racing tires on and wheel it around, both to dry the track and get rubber down, and I wonder if that would work (or even if the used tires are available)...
you will need grip for the outside groove,if you dont you will just increase the same problems. one thing that could be tried is double file restarts and comp. yellows.
Last week at Delaware, the ARCA trucks had two grooves. When they time trialled it was quite variable from 19.9ish to low 21. Delaware trucks have no problem on the outside, Super stocks can do it also (outside Pass).........so now we're down to the sub 19 OWM and LM.........and excuse me , but I think they put on a great race. Once 'nudged" to the outside some of the cars have been able to work their way back around, which kinda indicate a great setup.
Yes, it would be nice to have a new surface, but maybe just doing a good repair on some of the BUMPS, and maybe removing some of the inside wall going into turn1 and making a wider 1&2 would give the desired results.
Or have I already spent too much money.
Delaware is starting to come around, staff and management are doing allot to bring back the excitement.....lets give them time and affordability....they're gonna make it!!!
I don't know that slowing them down is the answer. Frankly, even the Super Stock guys are iffy on the outside lane...so I don't think its a matter of speed. Its a combination of a rough track, and the mindset that the rough track brings. I think the truck guys still race on the high side just because that's always been the style of racing the trucks have brought to the table...I could be all wet, but I think a lot of it has to do with mindset.
I wonder if, after basically 2 years of talking about it, the guys have just sorta taken it as a foregone conclusion that the top doesn't work at Delaware, even though passing still occurs there.
Still, some kind of solution would be nice. Its a bummer, especially with the LMs, to see 3 or 4 guys racing pretty even, and playing it safe by staying in file, because all of them are afraid to go high.
My first solution would be to make the win worth more points wise. I'f Im not mistaken, 1st only pays a point or 2 more than 2nd. Why take the chance of going high for the pass when you're points racing?
My own opinion is that points championships have become way too important in short track racing anyway. Take those end of year bucks and put em in the nightly purse, then make the championship just for a trophy. You'd see guys learning to make the outside work.
