You hit the nalil on the head Thomson,
Enduros were started to get the avg Joe spectator out of the stands and on the track, to give racing a shot, for VERY LITLLE MONEY and everyone had the chance to have some fun. It looks like that is long gone. Nobody wants to be 2-3 seconds behind so the next natural step is to UPGRADE. PS Whats up with caution flags in an Enduro.
Again I'm not knocking anyone, but if you have 5-7 grand tied up in a car. It's not Enduro racing.
Don't blame the crate rule for ruining this division. This division was ruined when Coward, Book, Newman, etc would have built engines worth well over the price of a crate engine. The crates were allowed to be affordable to compete with these "stock" (meaning heavily built) engines. Another rule in the coffin was allowing Vortec heads to be used. The older Caprice-style early centre bolt valve cover heads should have been allowed because you can still run a cast iron 4bbl intake on them without re-drilling. These are supposed to be stock engines but when did a Camaro or any other 80's GM come with Vortec heads?
I do realize the evolution process for sure. My dad ran enduros back in the 80's. He said that the Enduro cars now days are the old bomber classes. Question now is how long will it be before the Bone Stocks turn into 4cylinder race cars. I built my car for about 3 grand and its completely stock like the 80's.
My new car is for sure going to be way more but what can I do. I like running once a month and not every week. If I wanted to I could make it into a Thunder Car for Flamboro, but I love Delaware and wouldn't go anywhere else.
Eduro used to stand for endurance. Back in the day you couldn't do 23 or 24 second laps since there were so many cars on the track. Sometimes 45 seconds was doing good. You had better pack a lunch also since if your car quit that is where you were staying for the next few hours. Short race distances started the decline in the enduro clas IMO. The Enduro class at Delaware is not an Endurance class so lets rename it to get a little closer to reality. Diamonds, and as Thomson says, Bombers are two available names that more closely reflect what this class has become. I know we have been around this subject many times but if you want a true endurance class again, one where guys went to the bone yard and stripped a car and went "racing", then have one or two events a year, have the rules so that the car is stock, stock, stock, with flammable material removed and go run. Back in the day when first place started the race looking at the bumper of last place you didn't even need roll cages. Rant done now.
I'm not sure if your trying to insult me or the big spenders. Yes I have a real job, family, kids etc. I could spend 4000.00 on a motor to win 500.00. But then I'd have no wife, or kids. Just want to have some fun.
