Shane Pecore wins inaugural Bandit Motorsports Sportsman Challenge!
Cornwall, Ont – Sunday, May 3, 2015 – Martin Bélanger – A gorgeous day greeted race fans and teams at Cornwall Motor Speedway for the 2015 season opener, with a busy afternoon of racing with the 1st round of the Bandit Motorsports Sportsman Challenge with a 100-lap event, 1st round of the Ultimate Pro-Stock Series with two 25-lap event, twin 25-lap for the Modified with also extended races for Semi-Pro and Mini-Stock.
Ricky Thompson is the early leader in the 100-lap Bandit Motorsport Sportsman Challenge as he led the first 3 laps with Mathieu Desjardins being able to pass him on the following lap taking the high side of the speedway. Desjardins continues to be the leader was we hit lap 20 with Corey Wheeler making his way to the top 3. Wheeler was running strong on the bottom and was able to pass Desjardins on lap 27. Wheeler survived several caution as they reached the halfway point with Desjardins still in second and Shane Pecore in third with several battles going on in the back as 29 cars were still running by lap 60. Desjardins battle back his way to the top spot with Wheeler and Pecore behind him as the feature hit lap 75. With a restart on lap 82, Desjardins got hit and lost his top spot causing the yellow. A lot of position changes in the top 5 in the final portion of the race as Shane Pecore was in the lead with Wheeler and Ryan Stabler in third. Pecore led the final laps to win over Corey Wheeler as Jessica Power came out strong in the last lap finishing in third.
Carey Terrance and Danny Johnson went into a great battle for the lead in the first 25-lap Modified event in the portion of the race with Terrance using the low lane and Johnson the high lane. An accident occurred on lap 7 with Gabriel Richer and Gage Morin sustaining heavy damage. Johnson to the lead on the following green with Lee Ladouceur having strong run passing Terrance for second. Johnson never looked back and got the first win of the season.
Danny Johnson completed the sweep in the Modified ranks taking the lead in the final portion of the 25-lap event as he passed Chris Raabe to win his second feature of the evening and Lee Ladouceur capping off a great night finishing in third
In the new Ultimate Pro-Stock Series race, George Renaud was the early leader with Dave Bissonnette getting closer to the leader as Guy Viens running strong in third. A caution on lap 8 mixed up the lead with Bissonnette taking the lead over Renaud with Stephane Lemire now in third at the halfway point. Rosco Garreau had the strongest car in the last portion making his way to the front passing Bissonnette with 5 to go with Valade following suit while Bissonnette fading to fourth. Garreau left the final laps to win his first ever race of Renaud and Valade completing the top 3.
In the second Ultimate Pro-Stock Series Race, Claude Parisien took the lead in the first 2 laps and build a good lead over the field as Stephane Lemire was running in second. Parisien had a really good run until Lemire was able to pass him on lap 16 with Jocelyn Roy joining the leader pack and racing side by side for the final laps, Roy used the top side to pass Lemire and win the second race.
In the 35-lap Semi-Pro feature, Bruno Richard leading the pack with Derek Cryderman and Adam Delormier having great battle hanging on to his third spot. Bruno Richard has issues with his car and loses his first spot to Derek Cryderman. A few cautions slowed the feature as Nico Leblanc got closer to the leader and passed him just before the halfway point and led the final portion to win the feature over Cryderman and Brian Billings.
Marc Dagenais took the lead in the 25-lap Mini-Stock and opened up a nice lead over Justin Desrosiers and Chris James. Dagenais was the car to beat in the early stage of the race with the top 3 remaining unchanged. Second caution came as bad luck occurred for Chris James and Justin Desrosiers bringing new drivers up to the front at the halfway point. Dagenais never looked back leading the entire feature winning over JF Page and Riley McGonagle in third.
The action will continue in two weeks with the first race of the Bandit Motorsports Canadian Nationals with a complete program for all other programs.
