Mopar...sounds nice but...lol
If that did happen they better sale weekend passes! lol
I think between the turnout of fans / cars / $$$ that the fat lady is in the wings warming up her voice.
I hope all of you revel in this fact. You killed something that was very successful at one time. Well you're not totally responsible, but you have to admit you had a part in it.
Ashes to ashes, corn to corn 🙁
I visited Wasaga Beach Speedway this past week and it was very, very sad. And that deal was totally different. The town encroached on the speedway... Like Pinecrest. Barrie is still 15km from development, but it will become the latest ghost speedway... because no one cared or dared to take a risk.
These are the times of the latest and greatest. Why have a iPhone when you can have the iPhone G3S with the added compass and some other things you will never use.
Very sad when some tracks in the US are charging very competitive $$$ at the gate and fostering family entertainment with coolers and cookouts and providing great shows. The people have interest in the speedway and look forward to the weekend. The fans want to interact with their local heroes and cheer for a regular guy who is out on the track racing his heart out for the fans. Someone they can connect with.
This is excruiciating for me. To see my home on life support. And we race in the division least affected by what's going on.
I'm hoping that some of you with the Sunset dagger can realize... I always loved this place. I appreciated Sunset. I'm happy for you, but this is quite sad.
A very good friend of mine said, "we have a car and we want to race. Period."
I am feeling it's too late. IMO
No Offence Kev/Thunder 6, Ive Been going to Barrie since I was A kid as well. It wasnt untill the track changed hands that things went this way!!!! Its unfortunate yes, have I stopped going there NO!! I have a feeling that if the track was in the right hands Gordie would have some competition in the LLM, and that you would still see a regular group out to race every sat night.
But when the Gestopo came in turnin peoples coolers over and acting like a bunch of asshats. The real spine at Barrie sad enough is enough!! The Bakers and The Browns.. The Watsons and Every other clan that runs on pure competition went where the competition is.... down the road...
I find myself amazed at what has happened in the two years ive been away in alberta!!! The`Dump On The Hump, is NO MORE.. They are more like THE KING OF THE HILL.
Its too bad that steve and brad walked away at the pinnicle of barries existance!!( At least in the last 20 years) If Barrie is to survive The current owners need a quick lesson on what racing really is!! get your head outta the colts asses (sorry!!!) and get your ass into an infield seat at a NASCAR race to see what real racing fans and crews are all about!!! Its about the family getting together around one car, that might come home in a box. but if it doesnt and it comes home with the trophy and some coin, thats the year folks!!! and of course were gonna have a drink or two after to celebrate!! so dont send the OPP on us to spoil it!!! THATS WHAT I MISS FROM BARRIE!!! after the racing was done and the drivers sorted their crap, everyone settled down to a drink and a cheers to a night well fought out!!
I hate to be the person who brings this up, however maybe both tracks can't thrive at the same time. I have been going to Barrie/Sunset since the late 80's, and while it doesn't give me a 50 year perspective, I have been witness to 20+ years of racing. During this time, I can't think of a time where both tracks thrived. One or the other was always clearly on top.
I know this is a site where people think that local racing is the greatest thing in the world, and I agree. However, lets be honest, most of the general public doesn't agree. There just isn't the fan base to fill both places. Running a Friday night won't work because A) Good luck getting to the track if you have to take the 400, and B) the die hard racers are still going to choose Kawartha.
To think that you are going to get the general public to attend 2 nights in a weekend, when there is more than enough to do around the area, well that just doesn't work. And this isn't uncommon where there are two tracks close together. Look at Kawartha/Peterboro as another example.
Bottom line is no matter who runs the track, you won't have both of them at the top of the heap. There are a limited number of fans and a limited number of cars out there. No one is going to jump in and spend a ton of money on Barrie right now because the momentum has shifted. Unfortunatly as history has shown, in 10 years things will just shift the other way.
Having the tracks work together in some capacity is a good idea, however if you want to build the fan base, you need big shows. Somehow we need to have 4-5 BIG races a year at tracks that are close together. But, when you have points racing, no one is going to leave their track because they will lose their precious points. Which leads me to my next dream. Could you imagine if the tracks in the area could hold large inivitationals, once per year and include home track points in that. For example, Sunset, Barrie, Kawartha, Peterboro each hold one invitational "points" race. So during that race at Barrie, all of the other tracks are dark (maybe run it on a sunday), and the points you get in that invitational go towards your home track points. It would be a great opportunity to have big races with huge car counts, which would help grow the sport in at least a little way. Just a thought
I do believe a lot of people have forgotten that Mark Dilley had a big part in building Barrie speedway with Brad and Steve. He never got the recognicion that he truly deserved. BRAD was the talker, Steve the wallet, and Mark the builder. Mark knew what a race track should be , and he built it. Sorry to see Barrie Speedway go to the dogs, but hats off to Mark Dilley, You built it and they came. Top notch Mark, Top notch.
