Once again sorry for a slight delay in processing this, but its 20 min rundown time again. Pretty decent night of racing all in all, and especially in the LLM in which both 30 lap features went caution free. Speaking of the Lates, the story of the night was the 10 of Shepherd who popped his motor in warm up. Right after this turn of events, a couple different teams offered up their rides to Gordie for the night, with Shepherd finally settling into the Leon"s Orillia/Skelton Truck Lines Fusion usually campaigned by #28 Robin Jongen. Nice touch of class by those guys to help Gord keep in striking range of Quesnelle and also to maintain his hold on 2nd in the standings.
In the first 30 it was the 11 of Gaunt breaking into the early lead from pole position, as #2 "Hometown" Mike Brown manuvered around #55 Steve Quesnelle to take control of 2nd in the early stages. Quick to follow the Brown move, was the duo of #54 Randy Bull and defending track champ #69 Al "Red Rocket" Inglis, as they also would pass Quesnelle to the outside to claim 3rd and 4th respectively. By lap 8, the best battle was shaping up for 5th, as Shepherd in the borrowed ride made his way past #8 Dave Lewis entering turn 1. Unfortunately for Shepherd his push towards the front was halted, as Lewis battled back to claim 5th, with point leader #57 Ron Quesnelle following that move to slide Shepherd further back in the running order.
At the front, Gaunt was still in control by 2-3 car lengths over Brown, with the leader completing laps just a shade over the 15 second mark. Just past midway, the 4 car train of Gaunt, Brown, Bull, and Inglis would break away from the pack, while in behind Shepherd would come out on top of a solid door to door battle with Steve Quesnelle for sixth. On lap 21, the ever improving Bull really began to turn up the heat on Brown, looking to both the high and low side in an attempt to jostle away the runner up post. Bull, would overcook it into corner two during this course of events, as the schrewed veteran Inglis relieved him of the 3rd place position in the process.. It was green to checkered for Gaunt, as the 2004 track champ notched his 3rd feature win of the season. Brown, would get his night started off on solid footing with a 2nd place showing, while Inglis, Bull, and Ron Quesnelle rounded out the top 5.
In the 2nd 30, the nifty size crowd on hand would again see the pole sitter break to the lead early, as the 8 of Lewis found the point after the first few laps side by side with the 55 of Quesnelle. On lap 4, the 10 of Shepherd would dive down inside of Quesnelle to take over 2nd, leading the way for Bull to power into 3rd one lap later, as Quesnelle got trapped up to the high side. Throughout the early stages the best battle was again taking place for 5th, as Inglis and Gaunt waged war for that position, as Bull began to work over Shepherd in what was a valiant attempt to take over 2nd. Just past midway, Lewis had stretched his lead out to nearly a full straightway over the Shepherd/Bull battle, with Brown, Gaunt, Inglis and Ron Quesnelle all jockeying for position in behind. As Lewis began to extend the lead with each passing lap, it was clear the rest of the top 5 needed a caution to close the margin to the leader. This one would also go green to checkered without caution, as Lewis snared his first win since opening night in his Adams Home Comfort/ Dial Liquidations Chevy Impala. Shepherd, was able to salvage something out of the night in finishing 2nd, as Bull, Brown, and Gaunt rounded out the fast five.
Bit of a tough night for point leader Quesnelle who finished 5th in the first 30 and 6th or 7th in the second one. Think that's the first time all season the 57 hasnt had a podium result in either feature. If my calculations are correct Shepherd picked up 8-10 points on the night, which should make the gap about 40 between the two top bananas heading into action next week.
In OLG Slots at Georgian Downs Thunder Car action, a modest field of 13 cars took green, with #24 Leonard Johnston claiming the 30 lap main. Third feature win of the season for Leonard, who missed the opening night of the season, or he'd no doubt be alot closer in the standings to the 12 of Belesky and 10 of Walt. Speaking of Walt, the division veteran came home 2nd in this one and almost got underneath Johnston on the final lap out of turn 2, but was unable to make the pass stick.
The race would start off with #67 Jeff Smith grabbing the lead from pole, with #0 Donny Brandon sliding down to the inside of #80 Doug "Shaky" Shakell between 1&2 to take over 2nd. On lap 6, Brandon would take the lead on the outside of Smith in 1&2, as Johnston and #55 Shawn Goggins were having an impressive dice for 3rd in behind. Brandon, was running laps in the 16.4 sec. range at the front of the field, when he suddenly lost the lead to Johnston who executed a daring inside pass in 1&2, as #14 "Hurricane" Thayne Hallyburton took control of 3rd in behind with an inside move on Goggins while the pair raced down the backstretch.
The race's first of 2 cautions would appear on lap 19, as promising upstart #92 Teri-Lynne Dixon spun on her own accord while waging a tooth and nail battle with #54 Ed Cole. On the restart, Johnston would open up a two car length advantage, while Walt manuvered inside Brandon in 1&2 to take control of the runner up spot. By lap 23, the man to watch was the 12 of Belesky, as the point leader took over 3rd place after starting 8th on the grid. The 2nd and final caution came about on lap 27, as Goggins would turn the 14 of Hallyburton in corner 3, with both drivers summoned arrears. Once again Johnston opened up a marginal advantage over Walt, who as mentioned earlier tried one last ditch attempt out of 2 on the final lap. The two drivers actually made contact, but a nice touch of class was exhibited by Walt, who allowed Johnston to gather it up en route to taking the checkered. Walt had another strong point night in finishing 2nd, while Belesky, Brandon, and Shakell comprised the remainder of the top 5.
Heats went to Belesky x2, and Walt x2.
The St. Onge Recreation Pure Stock feature was again a caution filled affair, with a half a dozen cautions reducing the number of laps from 25 down to 20. As has been the story much of the season it was #02 Shawn Murray taking the feature win, capping off his hat trick on the evening.. Fourth time the gorgeous #02 Mustang has run the gauntlet this season, taking the speedway lead solo in that department, breaking a tie he formerly shared with the 12 Thunder Car of Belesky. Also seventh feature win of the season in 12 starts for Murray and his team based out of Alliston. This win would not be easy however, as Murray was dogged every inch of the way by #39 Travis "The Enforcer" Hallyburton who eventually finished 2nd. #13 Dave "Gipper" Glaze would continue his strong season, coming home in 3rd, as #91x Kyle Lethbridge and #27 Gilles "Frenchy" Harpin rounded out the top 5.
Heat wins went to Murray x 2, Lethbridge, #23 Terry Tompkins, #4 Charlie Smith, and the 15 of defending point champ Will Davies..
Since I seem to be on a bit of a roll here its rant time!!! 😉 😉 This one relates to 4 bangers:: Whoever came up with the ludicrous, cockamamie, assinine, hair brained, idea that this class should be split into 3 different heat races definitely needs to have their heads examined!! 6-8 car heat races on a third mile track just doesnt cut it from a on track action standpoint. Doing it this way just simply stinks the show up in my opinion ( If we wanted to see train races we'd go to Varney 😉 ).. I can see if you have 27 cars (as he have had on 1-2 occasions) splitting into three separate 9 car heats, but any less than 27 cars there's no need for it in my opinion.. Can you say BORING with a capital B??? ;D That's just my opinion, and heck what do I know?? I do hope someone of power reads this and my suggestion will at least be considered.. There you have it folks ......... FROM THE CHEAP SEATS.. Now who's makin breaky??LOL
You can say that again Dave. Boaring set of 4 cyl heats, and it saves no time. They have a couple bad heats with 11 or 12 cars, so they decide to break em up into 3s thinking it will save time ::)
And further more, with Pistol Pete blowing his motor all over the track causing an hour cleanup, they should have decided for the fans sake to NOT keep pulling me over twice in the last heat, and telling me im blocking and crowding the other cars!!! I won anyways!!
To the flagman, you havent flagged or watched racing very much, cause the guys in my heat didnt have any problems with the race afterwards. And as far as pick a lane......Its not the highway!! Its a racetrack!! I dont hit people, but I dont givem anymore room then they need! Let us race, if we bump, then say something. But 3 feet between cars is not contact 😮 😮 😮 😮 😮 😮
Ya that decision really puzzled me a few weeks ago when we went to 3 heats for 4 bangers. Outside of one night under the old system there werent many incidents in heat races at all.. It was come feature time when a bit of cash is on the line that a few select drivers drive like meatheads.. And as you can see last night that trend still continues.. Almost a full hour to run a 20 lap 4 banger feature?? Sure wasnt any sleep eaze D needed at my house last night after watching that..As I say it gets too stretched out.. Couldnt count the # of times last night I saw equal spacing between 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd , 3rd to 4th etc.. with essentially no real racing or much meaningful passing going on. Just like a great big parade lap out there.. 😉 I don't see how they expect the newer drivers in the class to get better if there never racing in traffic?? At least 11-12 cars per heat is kinda like a mini feature that accomplishes that. I know a few of the 4 bangers like Terry, Shawn, and Andre and some others visit here, and we know you agree with me Charlie I'd like to know if others do??
So how bout it 4 banger drivers:: Would you rather race 5-6 other cars in a heat race or do you find racing 10-11 other cars in heats is more competitive and fun??? Perhaps Thayne can also ask Travis and post his take as well.. The more feedback the better.. I'd do just about anything right now to see this changed!!!
I totally agree with you Dave, more cars the better in the heats! some drivers need to give the rookies some more respect!!! AND STOP RUNNING THEM OVER!!!that would cut out a least 3 cautions and speed the feature up!
In my mind the only way 3 heats is even remotely entertaining would to be lining up by points and skipping the B.S number pull to start the night.. 21 cars ( 1st heat- bottom 7 in points, 2nd heat- middle 7 in points, 3rd- heat top 7 in points) 24 cars same thing applies only to 8 car heats.. Seems simple to me and would make 3 heats way more interesting..But that said I still like (2) 11-12 car heats better.. Could even do it same way set by points.. bottom half in points heat 1, top half in points heat two.. Again what do I know I'm only a 42 year veteran!! 😉
