Will Davison is prepared to ride shotgun in order to help his FPR team-mate Mark Winterbottom challenge Jamie Whincup in the V8 Supercar Championship being dominated by Jamie Whincup.

Davison saved his best lap to last to take pole position for Race 24 of the Championship today at the ETIHAD Airways Formula One Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi, with Whincup beside him on the front row for tomorrow's first of three races this weekend.

Winterbottom has his work cut out for him back in seventh in his bid to peg back the points difference to Whincup in the remaining three events of the year.

In an intense 20-minute Armor All qualifying session that saw drivers angling for three pole-winning laps, Davison jumped to the top spot with two minutes remaining to take the fastest time and pole position.

Not only was Davison fast - he was consistent, too; his second and third best laps were good enough to secure a pole position sweep for the weekend.

As such, the #6 TradingPost FPR Ford will be on pole for each race this weekend.

"We've had pretty good qualifying form all season. It was good to bounce back strongly on the Gold Coast and hopefully we can carry that on here and finish the year like we started it," Davison said.

"(Pole) is very important. It's great to be on that front row and hopefully clear on what I think will be a lot of the 'dive-bombing' that will be going on behind.

"Will be nice to be out the way of that and out in front where we can just have a great race."

Davison's 2m11.766s lap was 0.11s faster than second-placed Whincup's best; The TeamVodafone driver having topped most of the session before Davison's last-ditch flyer.

Whincup still did enough to take second for each of the three races.

"I think the three of us are very happy to be top three for all sessions. Of course, we all went out to achieve pole but we didn't quite do as good a job as we should have today," Whincup said.

"The track changed quite a bit during the run and we didn't adjust quick enough and I was just done by Davo, who clearly did a very good job.

"It's a race out there; we've got a championship battle on the go. 12 laps doesn't sound like much but it's a long way around here and anyone could come from 8th - 10th position and be a factor.

"We don't know (How crazy the races will be) we can only predict. I think you have to look at Sandown; that was pretty nuts. I think we'll end up repeating it. Everyone will be going hard, not worrying about strategy and see how quick we can go. "

The two fastest drivers were a full three-tenths quicker than a trio of Stone Brothers Racing Fords in Race 24 qualifying: Shane van Gisbergen (SP Tools), Tim Slade (Lucky Seven) and Lee Holdsworth (Irwin Racing), respectively.

"Today was good for us and the top three are the same for the three races. So I don't think the format has spiced things up like they thought it would, although from us back there are a few jumbled up," Van Gisbergen said.

"I think Sandown was a good indication on how the sprint races here will play out. The soft tyres are going off after the first lap or lap and a half, so I think that in the 12 lap races there will be a few people struggling out there."

"Some people might race hard and some might conserve a little bit even though it's only 12 laps. A wide track like this will make for some good racing and the breaking zone at turn 8, I think it is, there will be some big passes into there."

The SBR Fords were quick all session and van Gisbergen had topped the times earlier in the session - and was able to secure third for each of the three races - ensuring the top three on the grid will be the same for each race this weekend.

Garth Tander was sixth competing a consistent session for the Holden Racing Team driver that will see him start the three races from sixth, eighth and third, respectively in Car #2.

Title contender Winterbottom was seventh and Jonathon Webb eighth, with Craig Lowndes and James Courtney completing the Top 10.
