Karl Reindler's nightmares returned in Abu Dhabi today when for the second time in his career his V8 Supercar ignited into a fireball, but this time he avoided the severe burns suffered in the spectacular start line crash in Perth 18 months ago.
As TeamVodafone's Jamie Whincup scored yet another seamless victory at Yas Marina Circuit to make it three straight in Abu Dhabi, Fair Dinkum Sheds Racing's Reindler felt the intense heat of the flames as his car began to burn from a mid-race pileup, and for the second time it was no fault of his own.
Whincup clocked up 100 victories for the VE Commodore, having the previous day made his car have the most victories (26) since the BA Falcon of Marcos Ambrose. He held off TradingPost Racing's Will Davison and Lucky Seven Racing's Tim Slade.
"I'm glad to be a part of that," Whincup said.
"I think I've got 27 (of those) I believe so I'm happy to be part of the 27 per cent of that record. Considering how many drivers are out there I'm pretty proud of that. We love to represent Holden who are a major supporter of ours. Anything we can do for them is good.
"You go back to April-May and it was pretty one-sided the other way. We have dug deep and won 11 in a row and now we have won four, so we've had a good run home."
Whincup is now 296 points ahead of Orccon Steel FPR's Mark Winterbottom with two events to go.
"Until it's mathematically over I won't rest," said Whincup. "I won't be chilling out on the back this next two weeks. I would be much more comfortable if we had one event to go. We have worked too hard this year. Not only did we get ourselves in a position to lead. To turn the tide - don't underestimate that."
Not so lucky was Reindler who could not help recall his huge crash of last year.
"I looked to my left and couldn't believe I could see fire in the car again. I felt the heat on my face and the first thing I though obviously was back to last year and to just get the hell out of there," Reindler said.
"I didn't worry about unplugging any of the ancilliary items - the cool suit, helmet fan, the radio the water - I just got out. I figured if I ran fast enough they would snap of, which they did.
"I am honestly fine. I was shaken up, just because of the memories from last year. I've dealt with last year and as far as I am concerned that was just an unfortunate incident. I have no injuries this time. I can just forget about today and start working towards Winton."
Reindler was just as concerned for his team who have a destroyed car just 10 days from the next event at Winton in regional Victoria.
"The last thing they need with all of this tight turnaround stuff is another damaged car. Frank Montagny damaged the one at Gold Coast two weeks ago and I am in Murph's car this weekend. I can almost assure that's not going to be the case at Winton in two weeks," he said.
"It's frustrating and unnecessary. It's just unavoidable. You come around a corner, a car gets out of the way and you have got nowhere to go."
The accident was caused when Jonathon Webb nudged Jason Bright who spun back onto the track. As cars came around a blind corner Reindler slammed straight into Bright, and Dean Fiore into his rear.
Left isolated in the middle of the track Reindler got out within seconds, knowing that a trickle of fire surrounded both the car while another blazed in the middle of the track. While he exited safely it was not long before the Fair Dinkum Sheds entry was ablaze.
Sadly for the Albury-based Brad Jones outfit Bright also retired from the race. Reindler's car was destroyed while Bright suffered damage that was unable to be repaired. Fiore's Jim Beam Falcon was also out with severe front end damage as a result of the same incident.
Back out the front Whincup was peerless although Davison scored his third straight second place and Slade the third straight third place for Stone Brothers Racing following the efforts of SP Tools racer Shane van Gisbergen on Saturday.
"It was a great weekend for the team. We haven't been on the podium since May at Phillip Island. We stepped it up that little bit extra this weekend. We didn't quite have the ultimate pace but we were the best of the rest," Slade said.
James Moffat, Garth Tander, Lee Holdsworth, Rick Kelly and Fabian Coulthard completed the Top 10.
The V8 Supercars Championship will now travel from Abu Dhabi to Winton Motor Raceway in regional Victoria for races 27 and 28 of the championship, on November 16-18
