What if you had a system where the heats are decided on practice lap times.

5 7
9 11
13 15
17 19
Heat 2:
2 4
6 8
10 12
14 16
18 20
I think this would allow for a cleaner heat race for drivers and could also keep wrecks to a minimum which will save time. I know everyone wants to see hard racing and passing throughout the night, but that is hard on the racers wallets.
Well I guess I'm in the minority here on this topic. I actually was at Sunset Saturday and watched the whole event. I personally enjoyed the time trialing part of the late model show, not sure how it would look with mini stocks but hey they deserve a shot just like everyone else. Not sure if you can track all practice times like they do in Sprint Cup but if you try and use the same qualifying format of slowest car from practice goes first right through to fastest in practice might create some extra excitement. I think it actually helped to have the time trials considering the number of mini's you had that night. And maybe if this was only done a couple nights a year it wouldn't meet with such disapproval of those out there. Maybe if you had a semi feature on the nights you did time trial for that division it might keep the fans in the stands happier where the top half of the field vie for like a trophy dash event prior to the features.
As someone who normally is at Kawartha the first time they switched over to the single heat and semi feature option it was not met with such great cheer from the fans at least but after it being around for a few years it makes for an interesting quick night for qualifying the feature spots. So for me the format on Saturday was something new and entertaining. As others have said nothing ventured nothing gained and it still may work out in time. Sometimes its good to try new things to see if they work and there's was a try that really didn't work out as planned, but was something to think about. I thought it was a good idea as it allowed you to see who was the quickest, without having to worry about somebody saying they just were because they had a quicker car.
I've heard the idea that I am about to post thrown around a couple times and I think it's one that should be taken into consideration:
Whatever division is scheduled to time trial on X night, have them time trial at 5:45, maybe 5:30.
Then at 6, begin with the heats yet for that division that time trialed, use the time trials as a guide to how to line-up the heats. Quick 10 in one heat, bottom 10 in another heat for LM/SS. One drawback with this is, however, is you may see people attempt sandbagging, though that's why you leave the time trials being worth the points they are, but also score the heats and feature.
