The barrie guys will have to confirm to sunsets compression rule,no more 1970 camero z28 pistons. 😉 😉 😉
What you guys need is comp rule, 450 or 480 lift rule and you might need a floater for the safety.
one year old manifolds... They're $125 a side brand new from Dorman..,
Furthermore, which two or three cars would you outlaw? The #00 and #44 because they're too fast but completely LEGAL?
... And I haven't seen any Muncie M21 close ratios around for $100... Plus clutch and everything else, shifter, linkages, pedals, driveshaft......
As to the New Gen, how did that screw everything up?
Oh Tex,
Besides for owning a new set of manifolds, you cant actually tell me with your apparent mechanical knowledge, that between weight, heat in the engine and cabin and tech, that headers would be bad for the class.
Being legal at Barrie doesn't mean much. The tech, as noted by the rest of the planet, is not so good. engines and cars go through there where what was being looked at was blatantly illegal.
Like a .060 piston with a .030 stamped in it. Or 1.600 valves. Or ported manifolds. Just dont cheat in specific areas. Like the distributor. Or the idle bleeds on the carb.
Are you planning to road race next year? Because with a 265 hp missile like the thunder cars, you could probably get by with a Saginaw 3 or 4 speed. 100 bucks at the most. Go look at the late models sometime. Unless you are rich and take 1st and 2nd out of a four gear, they all run 3 speeds. And for a shifter, most people i know run polish shifter rods. Like steel rods poking out of the tin kit. This isnt nascar, we arnt shifting on restarts. And you will probably say "thats cheap or mickey mouse" but 2 3/8 rods weigh alot less than a whole shifter and all the junk.
And Jim was probably referring to the fact that ground up engineered thunder cars have ruined the class. Now you can set the cage back and get almost on 50%rear weight, unlike real thunder cars. You can build them featherweight. You can saw the front clip of and pinch it down for no caster loss, you can tip the rear clip down for more instant/roll/moment center.
And thats not because of new gens per se, but because Barrie finds it difficult to use a tape measure or handheld jig and noticing big ass plates welded to the front framehorn kickup where it has been cut off, lowered, repositioned and welded back on, suddenly its legal and fair?
No. Thats why Sunset's rules (thats what this thread is about) should be about bringing RULES back to thunder cars, in the form of a rule book with some key spec parts, that is followed to the letter by someone whos knows a small journal rod bolt without having to measure it, knows how to use the whistler, and is not afraid of telling someone to put it on the trailer. If you measure 73.5 cc's on a 74cc rule, you are done.
Im just venting, im not trying to start anything with you, nor am i accusing you or anyone inparticular of cheating, im just trying to make some points in general.
Well, this whole discussion has gotten out of hand, as per usual. I'm going to "debate" some peoples issues, with my point of view. Ill fume some more, and be back a bit later.
I guess there is other things to consider, besides what has already been talked about.Barrie allows .060 overbore, sunset is .040,this other crate option they have, and world product s/r cylinder heads. After reading over bsw rules around,it doesnt really say anything directly concerning pistons.
But atleast you dont have to weigh 3250lbs anymore.
btw, whos connecting rads were teched? The eagle rod,is perfect for some,i would never use that chinese crap, but they are very light,approx.520 gms.Get ride of that rule, and go with any stock type rod,but not under a certain weight. :-
Larry, the way it works at Barrie is, if you are fast and get caught with something, IE two valve pistons, punched .060 over etc.. they just make it legal right there. As a matter of fact, a championship was won with two valve pistons when the rules definatly said "4 valve relief pistons". Its who ya know and who ya blow over there.
Oh, and they did check con rods with the boroscope, unfourtunatly there wasnt enough light to make a ruling. Dont bother pulling the pan though...
I would just check dwell at TDC to check for 6 inch rods, but what do i know. Oh yeah, and a depth mike with tell you the stroke in a pinch. 😛
A few people had their engines sealed by tech and the pans have been dropped. Not this year but in '08, IIRC...
The World heads are a direct stock replacement under NHRA rules and I think it's a good idea to allow them.
The rods? You gotta have something available to guys that isn't 40 years old and been through 600 bazillion heat cycles...
.060 or .040? Well it was .040 before the '09 season... I dunno if I'd even want to go anywhere much more than .040 with the heat we put in these engines but that's just me, it's what? 5 cubic inches from an .030 350... Is that right?
354.8. close enough, but .060 is 358.5
Then again, lets say you owned a machine shop and had some .300 high nickel sleeves and you could get almost 4 cubic inches, AND unshroud the chamber on those nasty old open chamber smogger heads and make oh say, 20 hp. Would you do it then?
That "rule" is there for someones benifet. You said it yourself, with the heat in these things and the inevitable core shift, its either going to overheat, go out of round or suck a cyl wall.
Its not for joe backmarker, who has to bore his already crappy .040 block, its for someone to use for an advantage.
