OK I was just thinking about this today.
Say Gordon is the points leader when they enter the chase and he doesn't win a races and Johnson or Busch or anyone else gets about 5 wins and others have a few wins Gordon could end up 5Th or so in the Chase standing with 12 races to go? Am I correct here so far?
They need to give bonus points for the Leader of the points for when the chase begins. Maybe give 20 points for being the points leader into the chase. I also think they should use the 12 positions and take away points for the way they finished before the chase begins.
So 5 points for each position is taken away. I think this would balance out more.
So say Gordon didn't win a race but was the points leader he starts the chase off with 5020 now Jonson won 5 races = 50 points but finished 5Th in the points till the chase so minus 20 points so he ends up with 5030. Wouldn't this make more sense and have a tighter chase?

Im a Gordon fan but, What if he wins 10 races and is the points leader after 26 races? Then he could have 100+ points lead startin the chase. Then over half the guys would be out at the start. not to exciting. I say give only 5 points for a win and i think that will keep things closer. JMO.

The chase needs to be tweaked alright but not that way. I agree the winner of the 'Regular Season" needs to be recognised and rewarded but the chase is a playoff whether we like to call it that or not. In the NHL the best team can conceivably be knocked off by the worst team. Same deal here. The importance of wins needs to be made more important during the regular season with more points and not padded during the chase. I also think that they need to get back to the top ten and then add in any team that has won a race and has competed in at least 24 of the 26 races. Then they need to award points to the chase drivers as if they finished one to ten and the rest of the field gets points as they finish. No use denying the 'Playoff' anymore. Might as well treat it like one and make the regular season actually mean something.
I don't think the bonus of winning a race should be added in when the chase starts....it should just be in the points system as it is...and make 1st place "10 points more" then it is now....and it's added right then, my biggest beef with the nascar points system is the gap between 1st & 2nd should be greater.....after all the point of these races is to win.
