SOUTHERN ONTARIO SPRINTS READY FOR SOUTH BUXTON SATURDAY NIGHT

By Tommy Goudge (May 21, 2009) – The Southern Ontario Sprints tour returns to the place where it all began this Saturday night when SMFreight.com presents the South Buxton Raceway season opener, featuring round two of the SOS season.  South Buxton was the site of the very first SOS event on May 18, 1996, and 24 total SOS feature races have run at the unique D-shaped clay oval located South of the city of Chatham.

Amazingly, local driver John Riegling has competed in each and every SOS event run at the track since that very first night 14 years ago.  In the 9 SOS events run at South Buxton since the tour returned there in 2004 after a 5 year hiatus, “J.R.” has amassed 2 feature victories and finished outside the top 11 just once.

Adam West from nearby Ridgetown is another local driver who has claimed victory at South Buxton, a feat he accomplished in 2007.  Adam had a rough opening round at Brighton and will be looking to bounce back with a strong run this weekend.

Warren Mahoney is the most recent victor at South Buxton, as he claimed the win on August 2 last season.  Mahoney has 10 career feature races at South Buxton on his resume, with 6 top 5’s and 9 top 10’s.  Warren’s father Dick also owns a feature win at South Buxton, which came in August of 2006.

On the strength of his feature win in the season opener last Sunday evening at Brighton, Glenn Styres heads into the weekend leading the SOS points standings.  Styres has never visited victory lane at South Buxton, but did record a runner-up finish last season in what turned out to be the only sprint car event of the year at the track.  Mother Nature interfered with 3 other scheduled events last season, including an SOS event in June.

Following close behind in the championship chase are Ryan Hunsinger, Rick Wilson, Chris Jones, and Jamie Collard by virtue of their .  South Buxton is known for some unpredictable finishes, and the standings could look significantly different after the checkered flag falls on Saturday night.

Along with the stars of the Southern Ontario Sprints tour, South Buxton’s UMP Late Model, UMP Modified, Sport Stock, and Comp 4 divisions are also on the card, creating a full night of affordable family entertainment!

I hear John Watson is going to be racing at Buxton tonight after taking 2008 off.  With the motor he rebuilt himself I know he'll be out to prove that guys can still do it themselves and compete with the store bought motors.

Also a new driver will be possibly joining the SOS for his first night ever in the seat of a sprint car.  Its going to be an exciting night at South Buxton!
