I tend to agree with cjt3viper that the Cascar sound is a little too subdued. I sometimes think they sound meaner tooling through pit road than they do under full throttle. I overheard a comment on the vendors midway at the first Canada Day Shootout that has stuck in my mind. I happened to pass two guys walking the other way just as some cars were going by on the track during one of the Sunday practice sessions. The one says to the other "They sound like Hoover vacuums." and I thought "Hey! He's not wrong!!". The sound from that particular location was more of a roaring whoosh with pop gun accents than the crackle and chest thumping bellow of large hp race cars. I like drag racing too, so maybe that's where it comes from but ELP is right as well, supermods make an amazing sound especially when 24 are coming around to take the green flag!
I'd love to hear the super series cars on the road course at Mosport without mufflers just once, but I get why it can't realistically happen and that's just something we racefans will have to deal with in the atmosphere of pc and nimby attitude that is so front and center in so many places. They're going to have to use mufflers at more tracks than not, so they have to be used at all races. That's the only fair way.
When Alstar went to mandatory mufflers a couple years back I thought they got it right. The characteristic sound of late model sportsman race engines is preserved but with the raw, ear ringing edge softened significantly.

Anyone that heard the 19 Dodge at Barrie, Sunset and Kawartha the past couple of seasons when it ran with the minimal legal mufflers could certainly hear the difference especially at Barrie with the headers. That 340 Mopar was much louder than the rest of the field.

Racecars sound way better without mufflers.

Oh no doubt in my mind racecars DO sound better WITHOUT mufflers...but I don't like the ringing sound in my ears. I get enough of that now as it is. Oh someone just told me that is the phone ringing off the hook for my teenage son. I have been involved with drag racing for many years now stock car racing, living close to a few tracks. I know how people complain about the noise. Mostly the new people moving into the area. My children have grown up around the race tracks they would fall asleep at the tracks no problem. The thing is mapleleaf1 is right a lot of these townships are having noise checks and it is the new people moving in that are complaining.

well those people moving in should know better than to move next to a racetrack. thats why mesa marin will probably end up shutting down. drives me nuts people who move in next to a race track and complain of the noise.
