Lucas Oil Can Am Midgets Celebrate 50th Anniversary At Flamboro Speedway

By Randy Spencer - The Lucas Oil Can Am Midgets were back at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway this past weekend and would celebrate the racing clubs 50th continuous year of operation with Twin 25 lap features. Lots of great racing and excitement throughout the evening made for a great night for the big crowd in attendance.

The night got underway with the Pure Stocks in their first 15 lap feature. Michael Kenny and Caroline Kelly led the field of 14 cars to green. Kelly has been showing some steady improvement and battled for second for the first half of the race before falling off the pace slightly just past half way. Kenny got out to a good lead early but on lap 7, the 42 car Leo Labarbera got high out of turn two and spanked the wall pretty hard at the exit to the track. After some clean up, Labarbera was removed from the car and in good condition. Veteran Andy Wheller battled Kenny for quite a few laps but was on the outside and two cars, Matt Young and Jaeger McMaster got by Wheller relegating him to fourth. For the remainder of the race, the cars stayed nose to tail and that's the way they finish as the checkered flag flew.

Fifteen Mini Stocks took the green in their first feature. Dave Goodacre and Rodney Rutherford were out front for this one. Rutherford led early but Goodacre spun out of two and brought the cars back to even. Rutherford retired to the pits and Blair Wickett made his way to the front followed by Hudson Nagy and Russ Aicken. Wickett started to run away and the real battle was between Nagy and Aicken. The veteran Aicken managed to get by Nagy and took over second as the checkers flew.

The Thunder Cars hit the track next with ten cars taking the green. Rookie Justin Collison led early off the pole but got a bit squirrely out of two on lap two and that gave Shawn Arnott the inside groove which he took to take over the lead. Collison and teammate Shawn Chenoweth battled door to door but Chenoweth made the most of the little bit of room and switched lanes and then got by Bobby Mercer and his sights were on Arnott. The two battled hard for several laps. Kevin Gallant and Mark Burbridge were close behind battling for third and fourth. Chenoweth was relentless and made his move on lap ten as the cars exited turn four, Chenoweth took the inside lane and passed Arnott down the front stretch and took the lead as the cars entered turn one. As the race continued, Chenoweth started to put some distance between himself and Arnott and when the checkers flew Chenoweth had stretched it to twenty car lengths.

The Pro 4 Modifieds hit the track for their ten lap heat race. Craig Shaver led eight cars to green and quickly shot out to a big lead and never looked back in picking up the win.

The Can Am Midgets would run two ten lap heat races as well. Tyler Turnbull and Steve Murdock were up front. Turnbull took the lead early. Neely would battle Turnbull but Lucas Smith and Darren McLennan would get passed. Smith set his sights on Turnbull and would take the lead near the end in turns 3-4 and picked up the win.

The second heat saw Todd Cresswell and Dave Hickson up front. Cresswell took the lead and looked a lock for the win. But points leader Mack Deman, who started sixth at the start was up to the front in three laps. He battled Creswell and got by taking the lead. The two stayed close but when the checkers flew Deman picked up another win. The B Feature saw just five cars for six laps to set the back side of the feature lineup. Adrian Stahle led all the way to pickup the win.

The second Pure Stock feature had a couple of twins on the pole. Tyler Mayhew and Blair Mayhew led the field to green. Tyler led lap one. Mayhew was running well but on lap 7 he took a hard hit from behind and hit the turn two wall hard. The 7 car of Matt Young was given the black flag for tough driving. During the caution Young took some shots at the 74 of Jaeger McMaster as well. On the restart, Andy Wheller took the lead and was followed closely by Jaeger McMaster. McMaster hasn't raced much this year but you wouldn't know it. He raced well and battled the veteran Wheller and they did so right until the end as Wheller took the chekered flag.

The first 25 lap Can Am Midget feature had Tyler Turnbull on the pole along side Todd Cresswell. A caution came out on the initial start as Craig Pitchell and Darren Dryden made contact. Cresswell took the lead out of turn one. He increased his lead over the field as Turnbull and Smith battled for position. Seven laps in the caution flew as Dave Hickson brushed the wall on the front straight. On the restart, Cresswell wasted no time getting back to the front and he stretched his lead over the pack. Mack Deman was having troubles and was in the infield for a while but finished. As the checkers flew, Cresswell picked up the win.

The second Mini Stock feature saw A.J. and  Mark DaSilva on the pole. DaSilva battled Rodney Rutherford early with Rutherford taking the lead with Clark Hartman was close behind. The two battled for several laps until Hartman finally got by on the front stretch half way through. Russ Aicken was trying to make a run for it and got by Rutherford but there was too much to make up and couldn't catch Hartman as the checkers flew.

The second Thunder Car Feature saw Mike Gilmour and Justin Collison up front. Mark Burbridge made his way to the front and took the lead and held it throughout to pick up the feature win.

The Pro 4 Modified feature was the next to last race of the night. Mark Lucas and Dan Petit were on the pole. The two battled for the ead early until Lucas got high  in 3-4 on lap six and Craig Shaver got under them and took the lead and held on for the feature win.

The second 25 lap feature for the Can Am Midgets was the final race of the night. After a draw for the amount of cars to be inverted from the first 25 lap feature, the number was 9 and that put Brandon Zavarella on the pole beside Barry Dunn for the start. Dunn led the first couple of laps. The caution came out on lap six as Tyler Turnbull, Todd Cresswell and Steve Murdock got involved in turn two. Cresswell was done for the night. On the restart, Adrian Stahle took the lead from Dunn. As the cars entered turn three, several cars spun. Dylon Smith was the only car not able to continue. Stahle continued to lead followed by Darren McLennan and Ryan Fraser. The next lap, Lucas Smith and Fraser made contact with Fraser spinning in turn two. On the restart Fraser brushed the wall and a caution flew once again. With less than ten laps to go Stahle was starting to build a good lead with McLennan and Neely following. Stahle would not give up the lead and he won his third feature out of four in the past few weeks.
