right Gary-a carnival atmosphere rather than the circus atmosphere that is there currently. And as far as promotion, I was surprised to see, with the two for one promotion for certain cities, they completely forgot about the 300,000 folks in Oakville and Burlington. Plus the way that the two for one is handled, it is not really designed to attract new fans unless they somehow got a schedule at one of the car shows (which again seem to preach to the choir-IMO Mall shows do better in attracting new fans & according to my friend Jim Irvine from Merrittville). They have made it incredibly clumsy according to a friend from Cambridge in that a form has to be printed from the website, filled out, and i.d. shown at the gate for both spectators showing they are from the hometown that is getting the two for one discount.
Food service has to be redesigned to speed things up. The ticket deal drives me crazy as much as some of the US tracks I attend that have a dollar bill booth and the canteen only takes singles. With a half decent crowd last night, the washrooms were over capacity and the famous roller towel was finished by 8pm-lol. Thank heavens they don't sell beer there. The washrooms couldn't handle it.
Free tickets in co-operation with a sponsor is good too. I know that last year when we were at Lake Erie, they had almost 6000 fans and I believe 1000 were there free from tickets received from a local gas station/convenience store chain. I actually got two freebees from another fan in the parking lot which was great. Lake Erie is strict on food being brought in from outside btw (we had to throw away water bottles at the gate) but the food was good, cheap and they actually had a small Dairy Queen at the track. Plus our tickets were good for a two for one Peanut Buster Parfait (which would be a five buck value) at the DQ in North East where we were staying.
Flammy still refuses to advertise in the Hamilton Spectator and chooses to advertise on two country stations, one in Kitchener and one in Hamilton (94.7 which was a Jazz station last year). I think a two for one coupon in the newspaper would hit a broader audience and they might actually start covering the track a bit more than is the current situation, sometimes a brief mention in Tim Miller's column which seems to be preoccupied with drag racing lately. If they buy advertising then the paper might feel obligated to publish results, or does it beg the question, are the results being sent to the Spectator????
I see Gary 36 as right on this. A new layout in such a lucrative market with the right bells, and whistles, could make a the best go of it all. A minimum full 3/8 (2) lane track would suit the competitor.
One thing I would do with concessions is lease out space much like the race pads you see that can accomodate the lessor. These spaces would be operational all year around and be available for all events any kind.
I am sure most would agree that people who are in the food business know it better than race officials.
This may stabilize higher year around track income. It would also give ability to track officials to concentrate on running their mainstay racing shows. A grand opening no doubt would attract big time, a strong web site along with twitter, facebook can be big in advertising as the place to be. The way the situation is today , just can not cut it forever, how much time is left and how many are willing to keep it that way ? Big crowds do not make everything a success, money management is key to everything.
hope they don't cut off their nose to spite their face if they charge cars extra for practice who don't run there regularly as there is a good chance, for example, a local llm who practices there from time to time, might just say to heck with supporting the llm part of the Octoberfest show, especially since the track has been known to reduce the purse if the guestimated number of cars don't show up race day amongst other things.
