I agree money does not grow on trees and the race teams that spent alot getting ready for a night that paid well would agree but they deserved the chance to have their pay day!
Now shadow there is no way you can disagree with that can you?
I can go along with the sentiment. I DO get what you're saying. But I also know that dealing with rainouts are a part of being a racer. The weather reports were iffy all day throughout the region. They guys, even the ones that came a long way, had to know that there was a chance of rain.
I agree that it sucked that the show got cancelled...you won't find a bigger LM fan than me. (Those big LM nights are on my calendar with a big red circle around em') But on the smae note, I just can't go along with the sentiment that the drivers somehow got robbed. Show me a guy thats never towed to the track just to find out there's rain. It happens.
So, would you rather have it like the old days when you'd call the track and get the guy saying "nope...all clear here" when it was actually raining? (I tested them on it one time...called the track from the Little Beaver in Komoka...they were lying thru their teeth.)
At least you know these guys are being honest.
I’ll try to respond to a few of the follow ups on here. Racerfan44 had his follow ups in a pretty good line so I’ll use them. Here goes:
1) .My understanding Gates open at 5 P.M. and practice at 6 P.M.or does this practice give preference to certain race teams. If so you have a big problem (Favortisum)
The other members pretty much took care of this for me, but rest assured there is no favouritism. Contacting race director Jeff Wilcox (519) 652-5068 Ext 203 can answer just about any question in this regard and put aside any fears of favouritism. You know what they say about assume…
2)In your message you say the target time for cancelling is 3P.M.
so as a race fan if this time hits and it looks like rain (Spotty showers). I the fan should change my mind about coming to the track ( especially if I am from out of town ).
3:00 PM is an internal benchmark designed to prevent extreme premature calls (ie. Calling it at 10:00 AM), not designed as a magic bullet for the race fan. It prevents us from knee-jerk reacting to bad weather in the morning. It is however is not set in stone. I mention the 3:00 PM simply to provide race fans on this board a bit of additional insight into the processes behind a rainout. Rainouts are not taken lightly. 😮
There is a big issue here when the travelling shows ( ISMA, ARCA Trucks, ETC) come do you use the same procedure I dought it as there are no rain dates set for these shows. You would have to get it in or insome cases you would loose your apprences fees if any. Here is the problem if you could not do it for the Twin 75 why can you not wait like you would for these travelling shows ( If this happens ).Shadowracer said $20000.00 gamble out of your pocket I would say you would wait till the late night to cancell these shows but not with the Twin75
In motorsports, every situation is different. Whether it is analyzing an on track incident, or deciding a rainout. The speedway does not choose the weather - we have every full intention of running all scheduled events. Touring series rainouts are handled in a similar manner, but with some changes. In the event of a rainout on a major touring series, a raindate may or may not be determined depending on the state of affairs with that sanctioning body. That's just a politically correct way of saying that it is a more fluid process then one might think - - we work together with the different organizations to determine course of action. In the case of dealing with any sanctioning body, they would likely be involved in the consulting process of a rainout.
With regards to waiting late at night to make the call, once we have SOLD you the ticket, we will stop at nothing to run the event.
I believe those should answer your questions, but please ask for additional clarification if they did not. 🙂
As a side note; we were all very much looking forward to this event. There were several returning faces in the pits and it was shaping out to be another very exciting APC Late Model Special event with some real wildcards out there. We had a good anthem singer, got an amazing trophy and scheduled a special autograph session, and received the brand new autograph books in the afternoon and were looking forward to getting these out to the fans.
In short: rainouts suck! :-

10 -20% chance of rain this friday
i don't think you can guarantee to get the show in
maybe you should cancelllol bif
Not until 3:00 PM. 🙂
Kidding - - but in all seriousness, I probably should have said somthing to the effect of "reasonably gurantee that we can get the show in", for clarification.
Thank You John ( Cascar Jr 52 ) for answering some of my questions but I still need clarification on a couple of things
1)John you were saying you would stop at nothing to run the event. In your message today you said your track had a curfew of 11P.M. So you are saying if you had to start a show at 9 P.M.you would get it all in by 11 P.M.
2)Are there raindates penciled in for your specials ( You should know by now if you are ) If no why and do not say because it is not supose to.rain A properly run business ( Track ) should have these in place. As you know ISMA is running end of September and if they get rained out ( Hopefuly not , you never know ) they run the next night inBerlin Raceway ( Michigan ) and you run Enduro Nationals on Saurday night. That means with out a rain date all tickets sold are NON REFUNDABLE I presume. And going into October they ISMA are getting ready to finish up over in Thompson Conn.
3) Question #3 on Reply 43

We would certainly do out best. Like I said, once we have fans in the stands we will do everything in our power to get the show in, but would be limited by curfew & developments in the weather. Each situation is different.

In the event of a rainout of rainouts on specials like this, they would be rescheduled at that time. Meaning; those tickets would be used at its rescheduled date. Same with your APC 300. Raindates are not officially posted & locked, because as I said, it is a very fluid process because of the nature of the business. This is not a way of dodging the question, simply an acknowledgement that each situation is different - - as you mentioned ISMA could not run here the day after, as they are at another speedway. What if they rain out there? What if our rain date conflicts with theirs? We would communicate and work with the sanctioning body to find the best solution for everyone involved.
3) Question #3 on Reply 43 On another subject is this track considering of putting the Twin75 Purse ($17925.00 ) into the pool for the APC300 See Reply #32. If not would you expane if you like to.Iknow this is a business and as a business personmyself and avid race fan I thought is should ask these questions.
While initially it may seem like a good idea to simply take the twins purse and throw it at the APC 300, this simply is not realistic from a responsible business standpoint. The purse for that race is not sitting on our desks waiting to be reallocated, it is generated through upper gate revenues and sponsor dollars. When the event rained out the purse did not get locked away in a vault. The event did not occur.
To wrap up; it does not matter if you are a competitor or the race track: You are only as good as last race event… Our last race event was a rainout. Rainouts suck.
This time next week hopefully we’ll all be talking about all those ARCA Trucks that are planning to show. The week after that, hopefully we’ll be talking about how exciting Hero’s Night was. My hope is that I have answered these questions reasonably and that we have put these questions to rest?
Thanks,
-John
