Hello,
I'm a friend of the driver who was injured at the track. He does have a number of broken bones and i'm sure he is quite sore as well but he is doing well.
As far as the sticker "I don't street race, get over yourself", it's a campaigne that our club upnorthimports.com is working on. We are trying to promote racing on tracks and combatting the street racing "trend". We are also trying to educate the public that not all "tuners" are street racers.
I can't and won't comment on other aspects of this thread as I don't have all the info myself.
Hey BIZL, tell your friend that we hope he gets well soon & that maybe he will come back to Barrie to watch some racing very soon.
BIZL I think I can speak for everyone that has posted on this thread and say that we all hope that he has a speedy and full recovery.
I couple of things still bother me about the way the whole thing was handled. All potential litigation aside, he was removed from the car, (I feel) prematurely by an ambulance service, and not by trained paramedics. I also personally feel that it was poor taste to let King of the Hill carry on after the accident. Please hear my intent, because I am really not trying to bash Barrie Speedway by saying that, but that is how I feel
Allot of times when I am at Barrie speedway, I take my two young sons, and we sit in the lawnchairs at corner four. I have always got them to stand with me behind their lawnchairs during King of the Hill, just in case there is ever flying glass, but I could only imagine what could happen if nitrus bottles were ever to explode?
I just feel that maybe it is time for the track to monitor a little more closely who they allow into King of the Hill.
I am also a friend of the guy with the black acura. I will pass the well wishes on to him and im sure he has seen the thread.
One thing i would like to clarify is that as far as i know he wasnt running and didnt have installed a nitrous system on his car. i saw his car on friday night and there was no nitous!
his car was his daily driver. He knows full well that crashing can happen. He blames no one for what happened but himself it was his desicion.
Our club as mentioned promotes taking it to the track and not street racing. We are trying to educate the public that all import tuners are not street racers. Many of our members are into the drift events and autocross, as well as attending charity shows and events.
Thankfully he is still alive and will recover. He will miss his car, it was pretty competive in autocross this last event. But the important thing is he is still here to build another car in the future.
Again thank you to those who wished him well!
I also know the driver injured. Infact, I kinda invited him to come out.
We both raced that night (I was driving the black Civic)...and it was the first time for both of us. Neither one of us were briefed on any particular quirks the track had. In fact, neither one of us were even informed that we needed helmets when we first signed up...although, I should have known as I'm a regular at AutoX events, and they require helmets. Once we learned of the helmet rule, we phoned up one of our buddies, and he brought us a helmet.
I raced against the yellow Neon first. I won. During my race, the tail end of my car started to come around a little bit through turns 1 & 2. I didn't think too much of it. My car is set up to be very tight and to oversteer a bit for the tight turns of AutoX. After my race, I stopped in the pits. Not too long afterwards, I hear tires squealling and a big crash...I did not see what happened. I look back and see the Pontiac still on the track, and I thought to myself, "I hope he's okay." We were told to stay where we were. The announcer on the P.A. said that the driver was shaken up, that he was complaining of a sore arm, but that he was okay. I was pretty nervous to run my next race...and I didn't even really want to run...but I did.
After the run, I got a call from his "girlfriend" from his phone. I thought it was him as the announcer basically said that he was okay. She said that they were on the way to the Orillia hospital. I boogied outta there and headed straight to the hospital. I had to come back to grab some stuff (ID) outta his car. When I got there, his car was under a tarp. The guy said he put a tarp over it so that if it rained it wouldn't get wet inside. I headed back to the hospital, and that's when I finally got to see him. He had broken numerous bones...but still managed to have a sense of humour about the situation. He was just glad to be "okay."
As a side note, the car did NOT have nitrous. It has never had nitrous. I do agree though that maybe these cars should be going through some sort of tech inspection like they do at the drag strip.
I don't have much else to add...so I'll end it there. I'll reply again if need be.
