Delaware, ON - Rookie driver Amanda Connolly (#16) of Aurora took the win in the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup Tirecraft 100 Friday evening at Delaware Speedway. Connolly started ninth in the event and took the lead from two-time champion Jay Doerr (#43) of London on lap 96 of the 100-lap event.
“I was loose from the get go and felt awful driving way up there [on the high side of the track],” said Connolly. “I think I stayed consistent and [the other drivers] went away. It worked to my advantage.”
Connolly made special mention of her mother who was admitted to intensive care at the hospital last week. Though she is in stable condition she was not able to attend the race.
The race had five lead changes between four different drivers and was slowed by caution five times. Josh Wood (#66) of London led the first 32 laps of the event before crashing out on a restart in an incident involving Jake Ott (#88) of Ayr, handing the lead to Jay Doerr (#43). Doerr would continue to lead until lap fifty when he was passed by Steve Robblee (#28) of Dorchester. Robblee would keep the lead for ten laps before Jay Doerr reclaimed the lead shortly after a restart. Doerr would continue to lead until Connolly’s late charge where she ultimately took the lead with four laps to go.
Shawn McGlynn (#81) of Waterloo won the fastest time in qualifying with a 20.164 second lap time. He took the Blast Floor Coating Challenge which saw him start at the back of the twenty car field. He made his way as high as second place where he finished the race. Third in the event was Jay Doerr (#43).
The Canadian Heroes race team unveiled their new Dodge Challeger race car during the pre-race ceremonies. The team ran the vehicle as a memorial to trooper Mark Wilson who was tragically killed in 2006 in Afghanistan. Wilson’s family was on hand for the unveiling of the car which was driven by Steve Moore (#45) of Toronto.
Points leader Gary Adriaensen (#55) of London won the Demar Aggregates Trucks feature race on Friday at Delaware Speedway. The win is Adriaensen’s second of the season, going back-to-back from opening night last week. Adriaensen took the lead on lap fourteen from Tyler Finlay (#25) of London and held him off through a pair of late race cautions on lap 28 and 30. Finlay finished second in the 35-lap race and Tom Zagorodny (#77) of Dorchester finished third. Finlay and Zagorodny also won their heat races.
Paul Fothergill came back from his practice crash at the season opener to win the Coca-Cola Super Stock 35-lap feature race on Friday night. Fothergill took the lead from Geoff Chant (#19) of Thorndale on lap 3 of the race. Second was Jeff Showler (#44) of Mt. Elgin, third was Kenny McNicol Jr. (#17) of Exeter. Previous race winner Steve Smith had been contending with Fothergill for the lead, but was forced out of the race after clutch problems.
On lap 28 of the Coca-Cola Stock race fans rose from their seats during the green flag run as a tribute to Dave Lawarence (#28) Super Stock. This weekend was the anniversary of Dave’s passing. He is survived by his two sons, Kris and Jordan Lawrence who both participated in tonight’s race.
Next weekend at Delaware Speedway is the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Weekend. Friday June 22 is Police, Fire, and Ambulance appreciation night featuring King of the Hill Spectator’s Races, GAW Recycling Enduro Challenge, Coca-Cola Super Stocks, and FT Garage Late Models. Saturday, June 23 is the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series EMCO 200 at 8:00 pm. Tickets and weekend passes continue to be available at delwarespeedway.com or at the gate the day of the event.

Great job Amanda staying out of the wreck between Shawn McGlynn (#81) Steve Robblee (#28) Jake Ott (#88). Not sure what happened to Jay Doerr (#43) but he finished well so he must of not got collected. We had a bit of rough night with brake that help caused the wreck with Josh Wood (#66). We were penalized 1 lap for rough driving...guess nobody heard of a soft pedal from hot brakes. Apologies to the Wood for the incident but it truly was a racing deal. We raced thru the field to get back to the front and of course calamity strikes again with Shawn McGlynn (#81) getting into Robblee and suffered allot of damage.
I was a little disappointed at the size of the crowd but I'm sure those who attended got their's money worth with some good racing. Heard lot's of shitty comments about the "Juice Box" from spies in the beer gardens so looks like we put on a show for the drunks lol
Congrats to Amanda once again, great job 16 team!!
We had a tire going down Jim is what happened to us at the end.
Soft pedal or not Jim, Sharpie said in the drivers meeting if a car goes around off your front bumper expect to be penalized. I'm sure Josh doesn't give a rats ass what the excuse is.
Actually Jake took the initiative to head to Josh's trailer to talk to Josh after the race to explain what happened and to apologize. There was no raised voices and it ended with no hard feelings on either team. That incident was a disappointment for both teams..
Well it was fun that we drove the field to get back to the front again so I guess all in all it wasn't too bad!! The kid drove his ass off. The last wreck was a bit of a heart breaker. Gotta thank J.R Fitzpatrick for coming down to the pits and giving us hand. in about 30 seconds he found us at least 2 tenths!!!
