Delaware speedway July 20th

A cool Friday night at Delaware Speedway featured The NOS Energy Coca-Cola Super Stock 100 and the Demar Aggregates trucks. A bunch of super stocks were on hand with some enduro cars being transformed to fit into the field. The Super Stocks proved they are more than deserving of a headline event at the track!

TRUCKS HEAT RACE #1

All trucks were put into one to make something along the lines of three feature races. The first caution flew on lap 1 for the #95 truck getting turned into the wall by the #25 coming off of turn 2. Trucks looked ready to get going right away trying to make it three wide entering the first turn of the night. There was a huge crash on lap 1 for a five truck crash, again coming off of turn two. It all started when a few trucks in the front got together and went around. Among the trucks involved was the #22 who was the only one not able to drive away. The #39, #95, #6 and points leader the #55 of  Adriaensen also involved. After driving away a few other trucks went to the infield for repairs. In the end after everyone settled down it was the #55 of Adriaensen taking the win, the #25 second and last weeks feature winner the #51 truck taking home third.

SUPER STOCK TIME TRIALS:

25+ super stocks were on hand with some visiting drivers as well as some GAW Recycling Enduro cars. The super stocks time trailed as part of the event, something that was new for this season and is quite unique and fun to watch. The all time super stock track record was broken by the #51 of Matt Robblee but only a few cars later was broken again by the #77 of Darrel Lake putting down a 21.010. In the end it was the #77 of Darrel Lake in his Dodge taking the pole with the #44 of Showler qualifying second and Matt Robblee in his #51 APC Big Box Mobile Chevy Rounding out the top three qualifiers.

TRUCKS HEAT RACE #2

The second heat race was started With the #51 on the pole and points leader Adriaensen on his high side. Only seven trucks were left with the #22 out for the evening after his crash in heat race one. A very orderly heat race, unlike the first one saw Adriaensen in the #55 taking the second heat win along with the first one. The #51 was closing on the leader but ran out of time and finished second. The #25 truck finished third.

NOS ENERGY 100

The race started straight up off of time trials with the #77 of Lake leading the way to the green on a cool Friday evening in July! A very large field of super stocks followed him into turn one all looking forward to the 100 laps ahead! Jeff Showler took the lead on lap 3 with a few cars also sneaking past the #77.

The race started off very clean with a long 27 lap green flag run to start the race. The #44 of Showler took off and was into lapped traffic about 15 laps into the race. The first caution of the race came on lap 27 for the #9 of DeJesus spinning in the apex of 3 and 4. The caution brought all the cars back together for some great racing. The top visiting driver was sitting in 5th position when the caution came out, it was very impressive to see. The field was very strong and the green flag run was very entertaining with racing all the way around the Delaware half mile. It was great to see some fantastic green racing after Wednesday's APC Summer Showdown that saw quite a few cautions.

On the restart there were 23 laps left in segment one with Showler leading the way with the #84 of Smith on his outside and Lake and Robblee behind them in row 2. On the restart the #84 of Smith just did not go and fell all the way to the back and pulled into the infield. Just after his hard luck things turned around when the caution came out for the #16 spinning. Word on the #84 was a flat tire, he was able to pull back out and line up without losing a lap!

The lap 28 restart saw a bit of a shakeup with the visiting driver #89 of Shawn Chenoweth moving into second. The first segment went green the rest of the way with Showler winning, the #89 in second and "Cowboy" Kris Lawrence finishing third in the segment. The segment winner Showler elected not to go to the back when asked. A very entertaining opening 50 laps showed the Coca-Cola Super Stocks are most certainly deserving of a "showcase" event on the season. Opposite to the #44 Darrel Lake, driver of the #77 elected to go to the back for segment two taking the whole top 5 with him setting up a very entertaining second 50 laps. Up next on the card was the 25 lap Demar Aggregates truck feature race.

TRUCK FEATURE

The #6 was on pole taking off of the start of the race. The small but mighty truck field dated close together off the start showing numbers are everything. On lap 3 the #55 of Adriaensen took the lead  and took off with a big lead. After the first 5 laps there were only 6 tricks left and they were all spread out an single file with Adriaensen moving out but the #77 trying to stay with him in second. The only battle on track was with the #6 and #51 fighting for 3rd position. On the 13th lap the already small field looked to shrink again with the #6 truck being black flagged. However it appeared he refused to go in staying on the track. In the closing laps the #77 truck was closing the gap for the lead but fell short on time as Adriaensen in the #55 went on to sweep the night clean. The #77 finished second and the #51 rounded put the top 3.

NOS ENERGY 100 - segment 2

After the top 5 had to start at the back the lead was handed over to the #17 of McNicol for the final 50 laps! At this point in the night it was surprisingly cool outside, thankfully the on track action was hot! The 5 going to the back greatly helped some drivers such as Paul Forthergill and the #84 of Smith who had to visit the infield in the first half of the race.

Just before the green flag flew the track took on the oh so wonderful smell of cow... You know what. As the green flag flew it was as mentioned above Kenny McNicol Jr. Leading the way! Right off the start the cars sent to the back took off looking to get to the front! On lap 7 the #84 of Smith had another tire go down sending him in to the pits! On lap 11 the #76 of Reid moved to P1 but the original top 5 were coming fast.

The first caution of segment 2 came out on lap 19 for the #47 spinning on the back straightaway. At this point the visiting driver #89 had moved all the way up to 3rd after starting the segment in the back half. Along with him Showler had moved up to 4th and Matt Robblee was sitting in 6th. Smith in the #84 had yet to return to the track by this point, leading us to believe it was more then just a tire. A rough night for the points leader. On top of the 5 drivers going to the back they picked up 5 bonus points, something the points leader was not able to take advantage of. For the restart the field was all tightened up and ready to put on a show!

On lap 22 a bunch of cars went around in 4 when Matt Robblee got turned! He was forced to put road with sparks flying everywhere. Not what he was looking for while he could jump ahead in points with a good finish. The spin started when Robblee was turned by a visiting driver and stopped facing traffic. It was amazing nobody smashed into him while he was sitting there. The lap 22 restart saw Reid's #76 still out front with the #89 on his high side. Robblee was able to rejoin the back of the field. On the same lap as the restart the #16 of Hosang was sent spinning and smashed the inside wall hard. She was sent spinning by a visiting driver who stopped and made sure she was okay after she hit. Under the caution Robblee dove down pit road for more service to his front right problems. A rough night for the championship contenders will allow others to gain points on the front duo.

The NOS Energy 100 was 70 laps in at this point and was a fantastic race this far. On lap 21 the #89 of Chenoweth moved into the lead. The race went green from there with the #89 of Chenoweth taking the win! An invader won the NOS Energy 100 at Delaware Speedway with the #44 of Jeff Showler finishing second and the #76 of Reid finishing third. Matt Robblee ended up inside the top 10 after his troubles. The race winner in victory lane said he loves the track and everybody is clean and he is thinking about Getting a set of tires and coming back weekly! An excellent night of racing on Friday July 20th at Delaware Speedway!

Is Steve Book and Derek McCullough finally moving up to Super Stock and giving us "average dudes" a shot at a win in Enduro? If only we could be so lucky  😉

With Lap times like theirs in qualifying (Hoosier tires or not), it sure opens your eyes to what you're up against on Saturdays. I guess we got some more work to do if we want that W.

From what I saw out there last night I defiantly think Derek is a good enough driver to race in the super stocks. If he could get ahold of one thats actually a super stock I think he would be competitive out there!
