Hello all! Well, you do have my apologies for the delay this week. Unfortunately sometimes life gets in the way and this week I just couldn't manage to get the hour or 2 together to put the report together until now. I'd say it won't happen again, but I really can't make those kinds of promises. I'll post a Fri night update when I get home from the races, but full blown same-night reports are a thing of the past while I'm on the shift I currently have to work. I'll do my best to have em' up Sat or Sun though.

So, the Shadow Report, Thursday edition:

Demar Aggregates Trucks

Heat 1
99-Koricina, 7-Clark, 4-Thompson, 9-Thompson

Heat 2
33-Rijnen, 88-Fothergill, 00-Johns

Feature
The race starts with 11 Kirchener on the pole with 4-Thompson alongside, then 9-Thompson and 99-Koricina. Kirchner's one of the slower machines on the speedway tonight and is promptly passed by Koricina. Right off the bat, 88-Fothergill is antsy to get up front, and works his way along the outside to 4th place.

Now the 33-Rijnen has a tire going down and has to pull it in early for a change. A couple of laps in, and Fothergill is up to 2nd spot, right on Koricina's bumper. The two leaders begin to open up a lead on the rest of the field, and the second pack consits of 56-Showler, 00-Johns, 82-Demelo and 4-Thompson.

Fothergill is not wasting any time tonight and by the 5th circuit, he's on the outside of Koricina, drag racing her for 1st and completing the pass. Now Showler is up to the leaders and goes to work on Koricina. The two main battles on the speedway now are Koricina/Showler for 2nd and Johns/Demelo for 4th. Order is 88, 99, 56, 00, 82.

On the 10th lap, Showler manages to muscle past Koricina to take 2nd. Now Johns is past Koricina as well and knocking on Showler's door. In the closing laps, Johns makes it a drag race between him and Showler, making the pass with only 5 to go.

Fothergill has first place well in hand, and now one of the best battle shapes up for the race, and that's a great 3 way dance for 2nd place between Showler, Johns and Demelo that lasts until the end of the race.

At the checkers, its 1st to Fothergill, 2nd to Johns, 3rd to Showler, 4th to Demelo and 5th to 01-Bloemendal.

Super Stock

Heat 1
5-Mairs, 48-McColl, 04-Humphreys

Heat 2
24-Richmond, 51-Rabideau, 3-Perkins
After the race, Richmond parks the 24 car on pit road, jumps out, does his victory interview while climbing into the 24 modified for the next race.

Feature
The race starts with 5-Mairs on point with 48-McColl alongside, followed by 04-Humphreys and 28-Lawrence. Early off, Mairs jumps out in front while 5th place starter 84-Smith barrels past Humphreys and Lawrence to take 2nd. The lead pack forms up with Mairs, Smith and McColl opening up a little room while the rest of the pack shakes itself out.

On the 6th lap, caution flies a when 7-Shields and 66-Peters get together coming out of 4 to bring out, amazingly enough, the first caution flag of the evening in any division. Now there's a sloppy restart that sees cars all over the place. Mairs continues in the lead, while 67-Hewitt goes too wide and causes the pack to scatter. No caution however, and rookie Smith is now tucking in behind Mairs. Smith is an experienced endurance racer and knows how to make it stick well on the outside. On the 9th lap, Smith makes the pass for the lead.

At the crossed flags its Smith, Mairs, 11-Lidster, McColl and Humphreys.

Meanwhile, back in the field, there's a great battle shaping up between 77-Lake and 51-Rabideau as the two fight tooth and nail for the spot, this lasts most of the race, at several points it goes 3 wide and in one instance getting frightfully close to taking out 60-Ott.

Up front, Mairs isn't rolling over easy, and continues to push Smith hard to try and get the lead back. But then disaster strikes with another caution, when, back in the field, Hewiit cuts down on 3-Perkins coming out of turn 2, sending Perkins nose first into the inside retaining wall. Huge, huge damage for the 3 car. No black flag apparently. (and I understand there was no apology later either...musta slipped his mind.)

After the green, Smith and Mairs continue in 1st and 2nd, while Lawrence now challenges Lidster for 3rd, and heat winner 24-Richmond is up to 5th. Another disaster as Lake and Rabidaeu tangle in turn 3, (while trying to get around another competitor who apparently can't hold a line, they told me later) leaving the 77 car missing a good portion of his right side sheetmetal. No caution this time though.

Now the battle is for 3rd between Lidster, Lawrence and Richmond, and Lawrence comes out on top of that one.

Final
1st to Smith, 2nd to Mairs, 3rd to Lawrence, 4th to Lidster, 5th to Richmond.

----------------------------------------------

Powerade Modifieds

Heat 1
57-Brooks, 70-Saunders, 38-Hendricks

Heat 2:
39-McCullough, 54-Limon, 1-Newman

Feature
This one starts off as a drag race between front row starters 57-Brooks and 24-Richmond, Brooks takes the lead while Richmond goes wide, allowing 39-McCullough and 88-Shipway to slip by. Doesn't take long before McCullough and Shippy are past Brooks and into the top 2 spots.

The order is 39, 88, 57, 3, and 1 at the first caution when 8-Naclerio goes around in turn 3.

Afete rthe restart, on lap 8, its trouble for 70-Saunders as the car begins to sputter and throw up a lot of flames, forcing him to slow up and bring it in. Now its McCullogh, Shipway and 1-Newman forming a tight lead pack. There's a little contact between McCullogh and Shipway, (perhaps rekindling a little tension from earlier in the season?) Shipway goes low and slips past to take 1st. One lap later, McCullough spins out in 3 to bring out another caution.

Now at the restart, 54-Limon is up to the leadars for the fianl laps. There's one more caution as Naclerio goes around again in turn 3.

Final 1st to Shipway, 2nd to Newman, 3rd to Cox, 4th to Limon, and McCullough makes it back towards the front to bring home 5th.

Night of Destruction

Ulimate Sandblasting Chaos Cars
Snot-Rod won against Red Baron, Bush Bomb and Blue Thunder.

Snot Rod rushed the fence to greet his adoring fans, and proclaimed later that the race had been a "Slobberknocker"  ;D

Strongman Len Elliott

Capping the show was a feat-of-strength show by strongman, and diabetic, Len Elliott. This was all in the name of raising awareness of the Canadian Diabetes association's clothes drive. If you have old clothes that are still good, as well as books and other such items, the Diabetes association will arrange to have a truck sent to you home to pick the stuff up. They in turn sell the stuff to places like Value Villiage etc to raise funds for Diabetes research. Its a great cause...so check it out. (I have some near and dear people that have the disease, so pardon the commercial - if you have stuff to donate, just call  (519) 858-3443 in London or 1-800-505-5525 anywhere else. Also check out the Diabetes associations website HERE)

Len first performed some weightlifting, at one point jerking about 760 lbs. Then he grabbed a big rope and proceeded to pull 2 chained together (20 foot?) cube vans down the frontstretch.

Ramp Jump of Destruction

And then for the final event: Kevin Overholt capped off the show by making the jump with his Crown Vic up a ramp and through two old camper/trailers. Probably hit the ramp doing about 70mph, and utterly destroyed the campers. He still managed to land on all 4 tires, leaving an unrecognizable pile of debris behind where the 2 campers used to be.

Usually I'm pretty blase about that kind of stuff, but this was actually pretty impressive!

High, Wide and Handsome

Rookie Steve ‘Pee Wee’ Smith was able to ace a tough field of Super Stocks Friday night at Delaware.  The former Transmission Direct Enduro Star claimed his first career feature win leaning on lessons learned and running where not too many will run.  The outside line!

The Arkona driver sprinted to the front of the field, and found himself chasing leader Jim Maris on a lap six restart.  Smith started to work the high groove shortly after a lap six yellow, and then pulled off the move on lap 10 the long way around.

Smith would hold off numerous charges from Maris, running the middle grove through the corner, giving up the bottom on exit, and taking the win.  He wasn’t even paying attention to Maris despite the veterans’ caginess while closing in on the checkers, saying.  “I wasn’t looking for him at the end – just straight ahead.”

He also spoke about how his experiences in the Enduro class with 70-plus other cars helped him with the move on Maris, “That’s where the car handled, and I got him on the outside.  I’m new to this ‘one lane’ driving.  In the Enduro races, you’re three and four wide all the time, and running four feet from the wall.  Some guys just won’t give up the inside at all, and it’s just totally different.”

The team’s setup strategy isn’t designed to work the top groove only, as he stuck the car about 6 feet off the bottom through the corners, when a good rule of thumb is six inches.  “We just try to set our car up to run everywhere, and it seemed to work.  I don’t know why more people don’t do it.”

So far this season the division freshman has looked solid in spurts, finishing ninth and fourth on double feature night, but has had issues such as a 19th and a 12th, leaving him 12th in points heading into the night.  He could move up as many as six spots in the standings with the run.

For Maris it was his second near win in a row, after leading much of the previous feature until a couple laps to go when contact and loose parts caused his demise.  He would come up short by just over a car length, poking a nose under Smith’s Camaro a few times, but not being able to draw even.

Point leader Jason Lidster came into the night with a 15-point cushion and made a strong early charge to the front from deep in the pack, but fourth was as high as John could climb as the longer the green flag stayed out the more average the # 11 appeared.  The finish was enough to allow Lidster to lead by 30 points (unofficially) entering the next event.

Smith will now learn a lesson that is reserved for Friday nights.  He will now fall victim to the wonders of handicapping next time out.  Then again, Smith has proved that he is the able to hustle a car on the top, but does he have any more Enduro tricks he can lean on?

Great Article Jamie, and thanks for adding it.

Just also wanted to mention that the Smith team was happy to be able to dedicate a win to their fallen teammate Steve Breddan, lost to cancer about a month ago. Steve had been a teammate in the enduro days and has spent the winter helping get the 84 Super Stock up and running before it took him. The guys were sure ahppy to be able to win one for him.
