jim is making very good points but i wonder do we need to bring up the endero guys if they dont wish to my thaught is there is likely 10 to 15 if not more ss out there just sitting there moth balled i really think the gap between the top and the bottom of the field has and is getting to large and alot of the cars feel they cant compete and every change you make like screw in ball joints and such widens the gap when it is not neccesary at all the class is safe and fast now !!! .All we need is more cars for more competition these cars dont need any more advancements and if peaple think they do its time to move up the ladder and if you cant afford that then you need to be content and stop increasing the cost incrementally for those that allready cant compete.
best post so far.
I'm not sure anybody is forcing the Enduros to move up, I was suggesting if they had a thought they would like to.
Getting back to the ball joints, this is kinda funny actually. We use stock GM ball joints and we had everything new for this year. Well during Friday nights feature there was a spark show coming from the #60 SS. After getting the car home we did close look and found the rotor was able to rub on the lip of lower control arm (right side of course). We tell this was case as it was evident cause the wear mark was there. Now sitting still about 1/4" of clearance. So how does the rotor come in contact with the lower control arm? We bumped the suspension full travel and it didn't affect the clearance.
We took out the ball joint and noticed the crimp on the bottom is not symmetrical and its quite evident. I'm not sure of corner loading is doing it or it was a manufacturing defect. I'm thinking it was allowing the stud to get pushed out of the ball seat (they are spring loaded) and maybe caused the contact.
Just thought I"d share that cause cheap ball joints are just that and it don't matter if you press them or screw them in. This particular ball joint is an Allstar cheapie and judging from the one shot might have failed
i have no idea whether any one would be interested i fear not because peaple dont generally like to think they dont know as much as others do but from our teams own experiance i can say if it were not do to the help of some of the top teams the 7team would have struggled for a couple of years or more before having even a slight handle on set up this year excluded we came out with jared driving reletivly close because of help from others we allso have the tools at our disposal I.E. scales and some good sponsors .My suggestion is to offer a free set up day and information day to any team that would accept some help .This would be put on by the track and some of the top teams and maybe builders to help those teams out there get a handle on proper set ups and readings aswell as ways to check things without fancy equipment this might lessen the gap between the top and the bottom of the pack and maybe bring some cars back. This might be a pipe dream but somthing needs to be tried and it sure isnt spending more money on unneccary parts .Help others catch up and it will be better racing for all.
A setup day could be very helpful. I think one problem is that some of the "slower" guys don't/wont ask for help. Its a pride thing sometimes. I know the SS division has always been great for helping each other. Probably more than any other class, and I love that. Sid has offered deals on new bodies to help guys, but nobody is forced to run them. Its great of Sid to offer a deal. There is lots of help out there if people want it, is what I'm saying. I know streetstocker33 has helped lots of people, as well as myself. Lakes help anybody. I think if more people just asked for help, the field could be closer. Have somebody else hotlap their car if unsure about something. Maybe something is wrong with it, and you need another opinion. Ive had others drive my car for the same reason, and it was very helpful. As far as making enduro in to an SS, and costing $3000.... I don't buy it. Add a front hoop, and used Hoosiers, go run it. There is a budget for every racer if you don't try to keep up with others on the spending. Took me two years in a truck before I could buy a NEW tire. Won two heat races on tires that others were throwing away.
Excellent post truckguy, you are a hundred percent right! as far as the 3000 number it was just a bounced around figure. Don't forget your going to need a few things to upgrade the car, that an enduro doesn't have. Maybe not $3000 dollars worth but you get the idea.
Yes Sid's bodies are an awsome deal and he has been very "flexible" with his pricing to get them in. as ar as the Lakes go you will not find a better team to race with! The support we have recieved from them actually enabled us to get started this year, Matt has heart as big as Buick!!! JR Fitzpatrick gave us a set of rims and tires this year to get our program going. That yellow paint was also donated by him. Without these guys we would have not even got started.
I don't have any issue in believing you could make the leap from Enduro to SS
