Jersey barriers were originally designed to make a vehicle turn into them when hit, at highway speed, to ensure that the car didn't go back out into traffic. Many studies have shown that yes the barriers grab the front end but instead of grabbing the vehicle in more cases then not it would flip a car or turn the backend out into traffic. If you look at the pictures of the 7 truck you will see how the front right was curled under when it hit the wall and almost turned the truck over. The 51 climbed the wall instead of being deflected off it or simply being pulled into it. Off turn two we have seen many times over the years cars being launched up and either out into traffic or flipped over. At Delaware on the front stretch and in turn one you can see how the relentless force of gravity is slowly but surely pushing the tops of the barriers over and in some cases pushing them straight out. All I am saying is these things were designed for a specific purpose which over time has shown they do not perform. I am sure when Delaware first put them in they thought it was a good idea and a cost saving measure. They will have to be modified or replaced with something eventually as time and the hill take their toll. What solution that is I am not sure but a poured straight wall is probably one solution.

We have been victim to the wall at both the same places with both LM and a truck near the finish line both bad ones. We are not the only ones. Over the years the walls have become  out of position and in a state of much needed repair. ( neglect ???? ) The walls need to be replaced, moved back, along with new ashphalt and grading giving a second line for passing.
This being done very few people would have complaints and Delaware Speedway would stand out as the track to be at +

Safer barrier's are not cheap, assuming you want something like the superspeedway's have in the States. Delaware would need to have Kyle Busch back 4 times in 2011 to build that setup.

Who said anything about SAFER Barriers?

the 7 truck went head on into the fence, what does that have to do with jersey barriers? the damage had more to do with concrete than wall design, maybe jello walls would have helped?

Safer barriers would have absorbed significant amounts of energy. The truck would have still gone through the safer barrier and then into the concrete given the speed it was accelerating at coming out of the corner, but with the less 'potential' damage.

Roblee's ride along the wall may have not been prevented, all depends on how he got up there in the first place.

Through the safer barrier ??? McDowell didn't get through the safer barrier at Texas and he was carring significantly more energy then any car at Dellaware ever even thought of carring. If you think the "Jersey Barriers" are such a great idea you should speak to someone who has hit them. Maybe start with the 7 truck, Robin McClusky, Roblee, the Modified guys the ISMA guys! You can't fool physics!

JAMR,

It depends on what angle, speed, lots of things... if the 7 truck hit it 45 deg at full power, oh wow, yeah it could have easily gone through. Not to mention the fact that the truck is a brick (steel bumper, full stock frame...) and a Sprint Cup car is designed to come apart.

When Jeff Gordon hit the inside wall at Pocono (last year???) - the only place a safer barrier wasn't in place and had scrubbed off lots of speed, he still hit that wall a TONNE ! - but he also had the best safety equipment in the business and the car, like the 7 truck, done like donuts afterwards...

I think everyone agrees that Jersey barriers are not a race track friendly element...

All I said was, I think Safer barriers are the way to go for tracks 3/8 (high banked), 1/2 mile or bigger...

for those interested super stock #7 will be hosting a free clinic on how to ride the front and back straight walls show advertising on the bottom of the car and not flip or damage the car while finishing respectfully.LOL really though we are really happy that all that were involved in wrecks on friday are safe and at home .Aswell thanks to the 28 team for lending us a fuel pump unfortunatelly that turned out not to be our problem but after a meeting of the minds with laker we may have the 7 car back up to speed next week its great running at a track where every one helps each other.keep up the good work shadow
