You have to have some sort of way to have the fast guys start near or at the back. It just puts on a better show. Sure starting on pole and winning the race is good (for the driver), but its not that much fun to watch. Working your way to the front from the rear is rewarding, for the driver and the fans. Oh and a thought on heats, I always just thought of them as another race to fill up the night.
