Basically, make a solid skid plate, preferrably something thicker than 22 guage. 16 or so would be preferred, and a good solid mount system. You can make them easily enough, and there's loads of ways to do it. There is no set way, but bolts through the floor, with thick washers/ heck chain systems, anything to make sure you are safe. This is one area, you can make safe cheaply with some thought process. If you need help fabbing an idea, send me a message here. I may be able to come by and take a look at what you have.

If an average size fuel tank could be figured out maybe a welding shop could provide a better price if a bunch of guys bought them? Maybe 10 guage with a bend on each end?

I agree Sid, thicker is better. As for Jim, yes fuel cells are better. But in the grand scheme of costs, it will remain the way it is now. By all means, if you can adapt a fuel cell into your ride... please do.
