all rims must be dot approved except for the right front. a safety rim has an extra reinforced center section and apparantly is not dot approved. budget friendly bassetts are dot approved meaning you can run them on the street. as for making your car faster...i can't see that. i run them because a) they look cool, b) they are safer and i run 5/8" studs anyhow, and c) go to a wreckers to buy rims and if you can find them they want $25 or $30 each. i buy bassetts (bas17473) for around $43 each. simple math.
The performance advantage comes in the weight, huge difference in weight between a stock rally and a racing rim.....If they figure out a way to slow the cars down to closer to what they used to be (which can only be done to a point with the car counts the way they are), then I could see going back OEM, but the speeds they are going now, it's not realistic.
always the same when racers want a something allowed. the arguement is always "safety" or "it's not a performance edge and it's not expensive"
"why not electric fans? no performance edge and cheap" . never mentioning that among other things, using an electric fan lets you move the rad around and lower without worrying about lining up the shroud.
"racing wheels are safer, how can you argue with safety?" just because they are lighter and have different offsets doesn't factor into it i'm sure. i mean who ever heard of changing the offset to go faster. tell the enduro guys that their racing rims have to weigh the same as stock and must have the same backspacing as stock, suddenly most of them won't be near as interested in spending money for "safety"
As far as electric fans go, why not? They work, and I like them and yah they are much safer with your head under the hood. As far as performance advantage goes if everybody has it advantage is gone. Pretty simple math. and hey if were going to rip around at these speeds and not use a quality rim you might as well just use stock seatbelts as well. You don't like the cost of safety? try lawn bowling
Oh yah yah just need a backspace rule, stock is 3<>3-1/2"
