Thrills and Spills on Price Slasher Saturday
Halloween in August was a spooky affair at Brighton Speedway. The $5.00 Price Slasher Saturday was full of excitement as Behan Construction and Free Flow Petroleum presented the five classes of racing action and Fan Appreciation, with fans getting down on the track to get up close and personal with their favorite drivers all for only $5.
The first green flag of feature racing was set upon the Bill’s Johns Comp 4 Division, action was heated in the fifteen lap feature however pole sitter #17 Jeff Humphry lead from lap one and succeeded in taking his first ever feature checkered flag ahead of Trenton’s #01 Brandon Gregory and #10 Travis Mclean. The successful night landed Humphry with the Campbellford Chrysler Driver of the week title. The next race on the docket was Motorsports of Trenton Flat Track 4 Wheelers. With two interruptions to the program for emergency crews to attend drivers on the track the race was shortened and Jonathan Jans from Quebec was the winner. Both drivers that went to the hospital for evaluation were released and are okay. The Gord’s Water Vantastics was an entertaining event with tons of action and thrills as Promoter Mark Rinaldi through a curve ball at the driver’s right before the feature, making the racers maneuver across the front straight chicane and through the infield, offering and exciting race to the large crowd on hand. The Vantastics also had a roll over during the event when on the final lap the #246 of Warren Mowat and co-pilot brother Brandon Mowat were tagged in the rear on the back straight away causing the van to turn sideways and roll over. Warren was required to visit the ambulance as well but both were released. #13 Rick Sopaz of Carrying Place was the eventual winner after other vans on the track were docked laps for hitting the tire obstacles. Sopaz was joined by co-pilot and daughter Jane Sopaz in Victory Lane. A quick clean up of the track after the Vans didn’t keep fans waiting long as the Bainer’s Radiators Canadian Modifieds hit the track with a 12 lap Dash for Cash, #4 Shawn Gregory of Trenton and #7 Henry Schneider of Picton lead the field to the green. Gregory who has been battling mechanical problems for most of the season took the early lead and in the meantime points leader #11 Dan Ferguson was cutting his way through the field. On lap 9 of the 12 lap event Ferguson was able to pass #09 Nathan Bosma of Trenton for 2nd and he began to run down Gregory, however on this night Gregory would avoid the black cloud that has been hanging over him most of the season and held Ferguson off for his first win in 2010. The Quinte Towing 6 Cylinder Stingers were up next and as a divisions based on a safety first philosophy and zero contact permitted in this beginner class a handful of black flags were handed out as the drivers seemed to be a little more aggressive than usual. In the end it was the #06 of Steve Wells from Picton holding off #41 Mike Fletcher from Brighton to take his second win of the season. The final race of the evening was the Brighton Automotive Pro Stock Duel in the Dirt feature and once again it was “The Big Smooth” # 72 Doug Anderson once again in Victory Lane. Doug took no time at all to work his way from his 15 place starting spot to and by lap 6th he over took #47 Matt Schonauer of Brighton. With thirty laps of hard racing behind Anderson the battle was fought closely with #55 Jamie Marshall #12 Adam Whaley coming across second and third making the top three positions a Trenton sweep.
The excitement continues Saturday, August 21st as Hotch’s Autoparts presents the Ontario Dirt Late Model series. Featuring full sized Super Late Models with 700 plus horsepower take on the 1/3rd mile clay oval. The Bainer’s Radiators Canadian Modifieds, Brighton Automotive Pro Stocks and the Bill’s John Comp 4 division in their last race of the McDougall Insurance Triple Crown event plus a 20 Lap Endurance Race will round out the evening.
