Sandercock Wins at Brighton, Runner-Up Finish at Can-Am

BELLEVILLE (June 8, 2015) – Charlie Sandercock completed another successful week for his No.57 racing team with another win and runner-up finish.
The Belleville, Ont. pilot scored his third victory of the season at his home track, Brighton Speedway, on Saturday after he earned a second-place finish at Can-Am Motorsports Park on Wednesday evening.
Sandercock battled a 20-car field at Can-Am on a rare Wednesday night show. The No.57 started on the pole for his qualifying heat and never relinquished the point to claim the victory. The reward was the pole starting position for the 20-lap main event.
The feature led to a battle with Lee Gill for the top spot. Sandercock led early before a restart allowed Gill to line-up in the preferred top groove.
“We had a good battle for a couple of laps. He ended up getting a six or seven car-length lead on me before I decided I had to be on the outside because that was obviously the fast line,” Sandercock said.
“We worked the outside and closed the gap to two, maybe three, car lengths by the end of the feature. It was getting to be a pretty close race.”
The laps expired before Sandercock could again challenge Gill for the lead as the No.57 settled for the runner-up finish.
Saturday proved a more exciting result for Sandercock and the rest of his team. The team finished third in their heat race, which placed them in to the invert for the 35-lap feature.
“The track wasn’t really wide enough to race two-wide. We got right behind Terry Hunt and Adam Nayler and just kind of held our line and didn’t wreck anything knowing we were in a qualifying position for the feature,” Sandercock said.
Come feature time, Sandercock lined up 11th. He hurriedly picked his way through the field before tracking down front-row starter Terry Hunt.
“We got in to second-place behind Terry Hunt and was waiting that out for a few laps. There was an opening to get by him and I took advantage of that.”
The pass for the lead came on lap nine and Sandercock started to open up a lead. A lap 14 caution erased that lead and pitted Sandercock against Greg Belyea for the restart.
“We had a good restart there. I was on to the high side and the car seemed to be good so we stayed there once we were in the lead,” Sandercock explained.
Sandercock led the final 21 laps to secure his third Brighton win of the season and fifth RUSH Weekly Series victory. Sandercock now has seven finishes of third or better to count towards his top 12 RUSH races come season’s end. The strong finishes over the first five weeks of the season will relieve some of the late season pressure, Sandercock said.
“It makes a lot easier towards the end of the year when it’s coming down to points chases and things like that when you know you have those good races to fall back on,” he said.
Sandercock will look to continue his good fortune with a pair of races this weekend, beginning Friday night at Can-Am. The No.57 will then be at Brighton on Saturday.
