Mayors Take to the Track for Charity at Brighton Speedway
The racing action is nonstop this season at Brighton Speedway, with another
fun filled night of excitement this past Saturday as Comfort Zone Heating
and Air Conditioning was present to hand out the hardware to the feature
winners of the night.
The highlights of the night include the 11th Annual Mayors Hospice Cup
Challenge in support of Community Care Northumberland. With seven
Northumberland Mayors and their team mates as well as the Northumberland MPP
the race was on to see that could raise the most funds in support of this
worthy cause. The Mayor's Hospice Cup Challenge was supported this year by
Larry Carr-Braint and MEDIchair of Belleville as they generously provided
each team motorized scooters to compete in a relay dash down the front
straight. At the end it came down to MPP Lou Rinaldi and Mayor Mark Coombs
of Colborne in a tight race to finish, however Rinaldi was disqualified at
the line by his own flag man and Coombs declared the feature winner. The
true winner is always the cause and Community Care Northumberland raised
over $8000.00. Special thanks to all who supported and to all the
volunteers that make it work.
Also during intermission the popular spectator 1 on 1 race hit the track
with 8 brave souls taking their street cars to the clay for a 1 on 1
elimination style tournament. In the end it was Tyler French and Justin
Ramsay making it to the final round with a pair of Honda's. Ramsey would
take that final battle and win the $100.00 cash bonus.
Bills John's Comp 4 divisions would start the feature racing off and Jim
Whaley #14 of Trenton would start out front and never look back leading wire
to wire. There would be only one caution on the event as Mark Packer #66
would lose a tire coming out of corner four and need assistance to the pits.
This would set up a double file restart between Whaley and points leader
Warren Mowat #46. Whaley would fight off Mowat when the green fell and
carry on for his first ever feature win and Campbellford Chrysler Driver of
the Week honors.
Bainer's Radiator Canadian Modifieds were next up for a 25 lap main event
and due to bad luck last week Mat Vanderlinden #9 would start on the pole.
Vanderlinden would jump out to an early lead however caution would come out
only 2 laps in as current point leader Dan Ferguson #11 would spin into the
infield. Ferguson would be forced to the pits but would make it back out
before the green dropped to avoid going down a lap. Vanderlinden would
dominate most of the race only as Ferguson picked his way back through the
field but with not enough time left to mount a challenge for Vanderlinden on
this night. The marks Mat's 6th win on the season.
The Quinte Towing Stinger division was won by veteran Andy Fletcher #42,
this was Andy's second win of the season over Steve Wells #06 from Picton.
Well Doug Anderson picked up the Brighton Automotive Pro Stock Feature for
his 6th win of the season.
