A prior commitment kept Greg Belyea out of the driver’s seat this past Saturday night at the Brighton Speedway for the rescheduled Ontario Dirt Late Model Series event, but that didn’t stop the Excel Tower Service team from competing in one of the most anticipated races of their 2010 season. Late last week, Belyea announced that Lee Gill, of Lafargeville, New York would take over the driving duties of Belyea’s number 25 Late Model at Brighton Speedway. Jeff Mutton was also behind the wheel of his black number 98.
While looking for a driver to fill his vacant seat, Belyea was quick to ask friend and fellow competitor Gill to take over. Gill, of course, is a regular at his hometown Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park, and leads the way with ten wins this season, and has already locked up the 2010 Late Model Track Championship.
It didn’t take Lee Gill long to adapt to Belyea’s car. Gill went out for the first qualifying heat of the night starting from the fifth position, and took the checkered flag. Jeff Mutton also had a respectable run in his qualifier, placing fourth. Next up for Gill was a four-lap dash for cash for the heat race winners. Gill finished the dash in second place. Gill started the Ontario Dirt Late Model series main event from the eighth position, and patiently worked his way forward. At the checkered flag, he finished in fifth place. Mutton was unable to finish, and was credited with a 24th place result.
“It was a great opportunity for our team to have Lee Gill in our car. He is one of the best in the business, and we really want to thank him for coming up here and driving for us”, says Belyea. “Lee is a real class act, and I am sure we will team up again in the future”.
With the top five finish in the Ontario Dirt Late Model Series at Brighton Speedway, The Excel Tower Service team, finished the season fifth place in overall points, and Belyea was declared Bernheisel Race Components Rookie of the Year for 2010.
This coming weekend, Belyea will get back behind the wheel of his car. The Excel Tower Service team will be swapping motors, putting the GM Crate motor back in the car, and Belyea will be back on the track Friday night at Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park and then back to Brighton Speedway on Saturday night. At this time, the plans for Jeff Mutton this weekend are currently undecided.
