David Scott Captures ODLM Title with Win at Brighton Speedway
For Immediate Release
August 29, 2010
The Ontario Dirt Late Models presented by Hotch’s Autoparts were delayed by one week in making their annual trip to Brighton Speedway due to Mother Nature, but for #3 David Scott of Garland, Pennsylvania it was worth the wait. Scott cruised to his third win of the season and captured the series championship in the process in front of the large crowd on PartSource night.
The 30 lap main event featured hometown driver #57 Charlie Sandercock on the pole with #90 Mark Glassford on the outside. When the green flag dropped and the racing began it was apparent the point’s contenders would make their way to the front quickly. Points leader Scott started 7th, one row behind second place point man #22 Greg Oakes. The two drivers along with #2v Chad Valone charged towards the front. Three early race cautions slowed the opening laps of the race, but by lap 6 Scott moved passed Sandercock for the top position.
Scott wouldn’t look back only to be challenged by his teammate Valone on a couple of restarts however Valone was never able to get out front and get the advantage. Oakes would eventually get by Sandercock for third and was able to get into the mix with the top two but with little traction on the high side of the track passing the top two was a near impossible feat.
Also on tap for Saturday night was the Eastern Ontario Vintage Stock Car Club for their first visit of the season after being rained out in June. A good field of 14 cars came from all across Ontario and put a show with their 60’s and 70’s style race cars. Jason Powers of Brockville seemingly likes Brighton Speedway as he repeated his 2009 finish with the win. Paul Billings of Brockville and Ken Sheffield of Picton rounded out the top three.
The Brighton Automotive Pro Stocks took to the track with a full 24 car field and with all eyes on the #72 Doug Anderson to see if he could keep his winning streak alive. However with #71 Lyn Miller leading early on she spun coming out of turn two collecting 4 other cars including Anderson. Anderson would head to the pits and make repairs without losing a lap but would have to restart at the back. In the mean time it was the #12 of Adam Whaley and #45 of Mike Schonauer that has made their way to the front and were battling it out for the top two spots. Eventually Anderson would make his way to third place and challenge Schonauer and Whaley. The three battled it out side by side for the last 5 laps and Whaley was able to hold on for his first ever Pro Stock Feature win and earned the Campbellford Chrysler driver of the week honours. Schonauer edged Anderson out by a nose to take second place.
In other notes on the night #19 Zeke McKeown of Hastings took home the Bainer’s Radiator Canadian Modified feature and #06 Steve Wells won his second feature of the season in the Quinte Towing Stingers Division. Richard Ferguson of Picton won the Canadian Modified mechanics race in his son Dan’s #11 ride in the last race of the night. Saturday night also marked the return of the annual Mayors Hospice Cup Challenge where it was announced that since the events inception at the Speedway local area mayors have raised over $72,000.00 for local hospice. This year’s event consisted of two seater bicycle races that were entertaining for the fans to watch as the mayors or their representatives and their partners worked together to race their way down the straight away. The race was won by the Cramahe representatives and top fundraising honours goes to the town of Cobourg with this year’s event raising over $10,000.00.
