Ok well as we"re gearing up for the big Thunder Car race this weekend I thought I'd give a list of 20 cars that I personally would like to see in attendance. I purposely left out Delaware, Flammy, Varney and CCS cars cause I dont know enough about the drivers at those tracks, and dont know how many (if any) Delaware and Flammy cars will show. I heard the vast majority of those run the 602 crate which wont be allowed in this event. And this is not intended to be a power ranking at all by my # system, just rather the top 20 that I personally would like to see in attendance.
#1 Dave "The Deuce" Doucette (Barrie TC)--- The 2007 Barrie track champ is coming off a win in Sunset's 50 lap spectactulor and also ran 3rd in the Sizzler Thunder car event in July at KD, after leading much of that race. Also has 2 wins and 4 top 5s in just 5 starts at Barrie this year so I would expect to see "The Deuce" capture at least one of the 50's at his hometrack. In just 4 short years Dave had become one of the top Thunders in the province so that speaks volumes of his ability do drive and set up a race car
#2 Willie Reyns (Kawartha TC)------ Not much more needs to be said about this 2nd year Thunder pilot. Currently leading the points at KD, a title seems imminent for the driver of the #87 Monte. Also the Port Hope native has had very impressive results when he's travelled this season, with a 2nd in Sauble's first Dash for Cash and a 3rd at Sunset on Aug 16, in a very deep 33 car field. While I dont know for sure the competitiveness seems to burn in this youngster so I would expect to see him at Barrie. (Here's for hoping)
#3 Herb Walters (Sunset TC)------ It was been truly a year of dominance for Happy Herb and his #88 Matt's Rentals Camaro. Several feature wins at Sunset tied in with a 1st and 2nd in the two invitationals there, speaks volumes of how tough he can be to beat. Also finished 6th at Barrie earlier in the year when starting from the rear of the field, track familiarity should prove to be beneficial for this talented driver. Herbie has been leery to confirm for this event, but if Herb has any stones what so ever he should be in the field.LOL
#4 "Flyin" Frank Davey (Barrie TC)------- Has there been a more consistant driver in the division over the last decade?? The answer to that would be no. Well on his way to capturing a 4th Barrie championship in 2008, Flyin Frank doesnt seem to miss a beat along the way. Add to that the 2003 Sunset title, and thats 5 championships in 8 years. Only has one feature win this season at Barrie, but expect the defending Fall Colors champ to be in contention every step of the way in his #49 Camaro.
#5 Scott McTeer (Sauble TC)-------- the defending track champ at Sauble is currently locked in a fierce duel with Shawn McAdam for the title this season. Has travelled in the past to both Sunset and Barrie if I'm not mistaken, and with the Sauble title settled Sat night, I would expect the #69 Bayview Roofing Monte to at least show up on Sunday to try his hand at Barrie once again to compete against the province's best.
#6 Todd Davenport (Sauble/Varney TC)------- One word for this guy, BARNSTORMER it doesnt matter the track if theres a big Thunder car race expect the #30 Neath Industrial Supply Monte to be in contention for the win. The last Barrie appearance resulted in a 3rd place finish in the 2006 season ender, so Todd had proven in the past he knows how to get around the Barrie track. Expect to see him there both Sat & Sun as hes not involved in any type of point race elsewhere.
#7 John Baker Jr. (Mosport TC)--------- If any driver could rival Davey for consistency its JBJ. Has won virtually every Thunder feature at Mosport this season while dabbling in the LLM division as well. Ran at Barrie in the 2005 season ender and won the last chance race after showing late. JBJ would then break later on that day, negating what would would of no doubt been a strong feature run for him. Uncertain of his plans, but with redemption at Barrie in his sights the chances of JBJ showing at Barrie are 50/50 at this point.
#8 Mike Poulton Jr. (Kawartha/Mosport TC)------ The #53 Camaro might just be the fastest Thunder Car in the province at this present time. A win at the Sizzler in July in a field that included both Doucette and Reyns attests to just how fast Poulton Jr is. Running a limited sched. this year, he doesnt really have commitments or a title to worry about at his hometrack, so the only factor relating to his attendance might be is if his car is legal to conform to the Barrie rules.
#9 Eddie Tremblay ( BARRIE TC)------- The early season point leader at Barrie suffered through some mechanical troubles at mid season, but seems to be back on track now. Two feature wins in the month of August, and currently 2nd in Barrie points shows Tremblay can haul the mail with the best of them. Has been bullet fast in recent weeks, so if the car stays under him all weekend Eddie could suprise those outside of the Barrie area.
#10 Rob Skyler (Sunset TC)---------- While I dont know much of this driver's resume personally, 2nd in the points behind Walters says alot of his driving talents. Not known for being much of a traveller in the past the Keswick native might find the purse too tempting to not give Barrie a try.
#11 Darryl St. Onge (Barrie TC)-------- Not much more needs to be spoken about the Georgian Waste Services Pontiac Grand Prix. 3 feature wins at Barrie this season, to lead the division in that department. The first of the New Gen Thunders to hit the track at Barrie currently sits 3rd in the points, and with crew chief Ron Mace on board one can never count Darryl out of the running at his home track.
#12 Shawn McAdam (Sauble TC)-------- Currently holds a 24 point lead over McTeer in the race for the Sauble title, his brilliantly prepared #48 Malibu is very fast at his hometrack. Not much of a traveller in the past, but with the Sauble title being decided Sat night he could be another car that shows on Sunday to make his first Barrie start.
#13 Steve Mayhew (Kawartha/Mosport TC) ------- this extremely talented driver seems to be focussed on the Kawartha title this year with Mosport being put on the back burner. The #14 Nova has feature wins at both tracks this season, pushing drivers like Reyns and Baker Jr. to the limits in every feature race hes competed in. Again not known for a travelling sched., I would say there's a 25 % chance at best he shows up to make his inaugrial Barrie start.
#14 "The Straight Shooter" Steve Slaughter Jr (Barrie/Sunset TC)--- Another one of the drivers where the word BARNSTORMER fits quite nicely. Was holding down a solid 3rd in the Sunset points until running into problems at that track, from there he elected to try Barrie for a few races with impressive results. Also has made a start at Kawartha for the Sizzler where he captured a heat race, first time on that track. I would assume Steve will be in attendance at Barrie and he really could suprise if hes figured out the loose condition he seemed to be fighting in his other Barrie appearances this season.
#15 Brad Holden (BARRIE TC)--------- Currently sits 4th in points at Barrie, in what has been a stellar season for the driver of the #97 Chevy Lumina. While he's yet to taste a feature victory in 08, and with an imminent move to a LLM in 09 in the works, expect this driver's last TC race at Barrie to produce some good results.
#16 Mark Adams (Sunset TC)------ another venerable veteran of the Thunder Car division, Mark has long been a top runner at Sunset, and is truly one of the cleanest drivers in he province. Not really a fan of the Barrie track, I'd say the chances of him showing for this one are slim at best.
#17 Leonard Johnston ( Barrie TC)------- Another guy who's shown remarkable consistency at Barrie without a feature win to his credit. Holds down 5th in points at his hometrack this Bracebridge native couldnt pick a better time to captire his first feature win than one of the 50 lap races.
#18 "Smokin" Joe Adams (Sauble TC)------ His last Barrie start resulted in a 5th place in the 2006 season ender. The Owen Sound resident currently sits 6th in Sauble points after missing a night earlier in the season. Due to this stature I'd expect to see CRO's own show up both days to try to secure a top 8 starting spot at a track where he's been impressive in the past.
#19 Donny Brandon (Barrie TC)-------- This rookie has consistency in spades, and has been coming on like gangbusters in the past month, getting his first 2 podium finishes in his rookie year. While untested against a field such as this, if Brandon's consistency holds to form you could see a couple top 5's from this driver in what is a stellar season for the front runner for Barrie's Rookie of the Year.
#20 Chance Isherwood (Barrie TC)------ The 2007 Kawartha Pure Stock champ made the move to Thunder this season. While the first few weeks were a struggle for the Utopia native with mechanical issues, his talent behind the wheel is undenyable. In 12 Barrie starts the sleek looking #35 Chevy Impala SS has one win and 4 top 5's. The #35 is one of the sharpest Thunders you ever will see, and with the good folks at R.I.M behind him, Chance is set to let his talent shine at his hometrack.
Well there you have it there's my 20!!!LOL Lots of good drivers left off the list and sorry for that, but I could go on all night with this considering the vast talent in this division province wide. I think we might see 50 cars in attendance Sunday( at least thats what I'm hoping) so should be excellent racing action if half to 3/4 of the 20 mentioned show up. If you are attending from one of the tracks I excluded in this poll could you please post your # and hometrack here???? Good luck to all involved regardless!!! FROM THE CHEAP SEATS........... you know the insignia!!!!
Thanks Dave good job. To bad you will not see to many Sauble cars come because of the cam rule, we all want to come but it looks like they are leaning toward Barrie cars only!!!!!! It's to bad, I think 5 cars were going to come. I don't see what the problem is we can run at all of the other tracks in Ont. It's a really big pi## off I want to come and race!!!!! Is it not home track rule for an invitational. Just my 2 cents!!
Good Luck to everyone who is racing the big invitational but I'm not sure how many Sunset cars your going to get...!! Barrie is done with there points nights after this Saturday, but Sunset still has one other night...how many guys are going to put there car on the line??? Herb Walters is running for Championship at Sunset and currently holding first place in points...!!! Is he really going to chance wrecking with one night to go!!??? I highly dought that!!! Steve Slaughter...??? Although he has been at Barrie a few weekends...he still holds a current 5th at Sunset...and he is back there now...he can still manage a third if he finishes well...will he risk it???? Feel free to post to my comment but this is just IMO, but I still wont miss it!!! Can't wait to see who does turn up !! 🙂
They will be their!!! They haven't got their complete racing fix yet with all this friggin rain, and unless their CHICKEN- They will show up? Herbie can borrow another car and still win the title and Junior can take Jeff's 4 cylinder out and still finish in the top 5. (LOL)
The only way you will see Herb there is watching from the grandstands.
