I think what some of the posters are questioning here is why we have seen, over the last few years, the trend of tracks using "Patient Transport Vehicles" or St. Johns Ambulances, instread of the Provincial ambulances that used to be hired at many tracks? At my home track (Merrittville), if someone is injured, the St. Johns guys seem to do the stabilizing work but can't actually transport the patient to the hospital and have to meet the provincial ambulance at the property line. Most of the Patient Transport vehicles, which looks like ambulances, are used during the week to move non critical cases from care centre to care centre. I guess the 64 dollar question, is what are the differences in the training of the paramedics in each vehicle? Are most tracks now using just fancy mobile first aid centres. Just food for thought.
When I was in my accident, like Steeve, they were awesome. Honestly, they were incredible with me. They were so calm, explained everything to me. They were really patient. It was the first time I have ever been severly injured in anything, so I was in a lot of shock and was so scared. They were wonderful. I wouldn't have traded who helped me for the world. And I'll never be able to thank them enough for what they did. I know it is their job, but they were truly amazing. They even came over to talk to me when they saw me there the next week in the wheel chair. Actually one even stopped by the hospital just after I was transported there to see how I was and to wish me luck. How could you ask for better?? 😀
I remember when St John's Ambulance was the EMS at the track. Not dissing the volunteer first aid services, but I think we are much better off today than in the past. Would I like to see some changes? Sure. But do I want to pay $35 at the back gate to get in? Not too much... Would I like to get $10,000 for a 50 lap feature win? Yeah. But it's not going to happen. I would actually rather see the Rescue truck on standby there first... If you need them they can't come fast enough. That should be fairly easy to secure, through a contract with the municipality, perhaps a reciprocating agreement that allows the Fire Service to use the Speedway for training on weeknights or something and free admission to the Volunteer Firefighters. Then you have LOTS of first responders and extrication services available to you. When you need them...
amen brother!
