Handicap should just be a simple 2 heat invitational format, with top qualifier drawing betwee 1 and 10.
Nobody likes the crazy guys up front anyways, they are only up front for enough laps to destroy a bunch of equipment. If your not fast enough to be in the top ten, you should not be on the pole!!
You may be okay with this charlie where the front 4 cars take off in a pack and leaves the rest of the cars behind.. with having the fast cars in the front we might as well just say let's all go single file racing it'll be an eventful night if that were to happen. Again going back to Nascar as well as alot of touring series (TQ midgets/Canadian Tire Series/Vintage etc) how did you put it "you should not be on the pole" unlike their cars. Cars that go to local tracks are at different levels of performance and let's face it we have a lot of skilled drivers at Barrie and surrounding tracks that just don't have the car. They come out week in and week out for a way to enjoy their weekend because they have the racing gene.
look at Smith 67 car in the thunder. he has been getting better and better every night with the ability to improve his car as well as driving skill. I don't think he would have improved much if he was sitting in the back with drivers in the same boat as him. Other drivers that have came quite a long way this year because they have started up in the front every few features are people like the 31 and the 21 thunder. Both don't have the cars but are willing to go and be up front to get used to racing and/or blocking to improve how they race. Yes they may be one of the slower cars in the field but they at least have the guts to risk they cars to improve.
So in my opinion invitational idea even though it is simple. I dislike the idea all together, that's why it's an invitational Format.
"Jim Beleskey 20 19 18 17 19 18 18 19 20 19 20 = 207
Ken DenHollander 19 14 20 17 16 20 19 18 20 19 19 = 201
Chris Burrage 19 19 19 19 19 19 18 15 18 13 20 = 198
Thayne Hallyburton 17 16 18 17 18 17 19 20 18 17 16 = 193
Leonard Johnston 17 19 16 19 17 15 17 13 6 11 18 = 168"
That's how I figured out the nightly points for people wondering and how they actually came down to it.
Might be too late in the thread for this but here are my thoughts on the race format and my quest for the end of double heats. This was previously posted last year and also sent to Jim.
I think we need to kill the double heats in all of these classes as
well. The same predictablity as in the LMs is a big problem in the
heats in all classes. I think that in general the heat racing is not
as interesting for the fans as it could be.
My approach is decidedly old school but that doesn't make it wrong.
Here is how it goes:
1. Split the field by percentage.
2. 1st heat is the lower percentage guys and high handicap cars start at the back.
3. 2nd heat is the higher percentage guys and high handicap cars start
at the back.
4. Top 4 or 5 in each heat are qualified and go on to run a dash race,
again fast cars to the back.
5. Remaining cars to a consi or maybe two. The top 4 qualify (or top 2
if there are two consis).
6. Feature line-up is based on handicap with the 12 qualified cars
lined-up first, i.e. the high handicap is 12th (adjust this to be
12-14-16 if you like) and the remaining non-qualified cars start at
the back again based on handicap.
You still get points for the heats/dash/consi so there is incentive to
race for it.
Your first heat guys get a chance to race together and an opportunity
to win without one of the fast guys messing things up due to the luck
of the heat draw as is done currently.
The fans get more interesting racing in the heats.
The slowest cars are not going to be running at the front in the feature
start until they are no longer slow cars.
Statsman my dad raced under that format, He said not only was it easy to figure out, but most of the raceing weather you were in the heat with the slower cars or the fast cars the competition was much more intense, a lot more fun and much closer finishes most of the time, the top guys in the heats ran a semi final, where the remainder ran a consi, and the top 6 cars from the feature ran a six lap trophy dash the following week with the finishing order reversed, I think this is a great format, and brings back some grass roots racing.
i agree with statsman and alterego. i have been that guy starting at the rear and the guy starting out front, the only thing i say about the whole deal is that if you r the guy starting out front be respectful of the guys behind you, don't just let them drive on by but leave them a lane so they can pass. i think you will find it does make the racing a lot more exciting for the drivers and the spectators alike!imo
As an interested observer I have always wondered why tracks have to make things so difficult. From a fan's point of view the simpler the format and points system the better. I hate making this comparison but I think that is one of the main reasons NASCAR became more popular because the points system was easy to understand. I couldn't find Delaware's point breakdown on their website but the heat and feature format is pretty simple. Each division gets divided half, fast half and slow half. The first heat has the slower cars and the second heat has the fast cars. The feature starting order is determined by the heats. I can't say exactly how as I can't find this on their website either but I have never seen the slowest cars starting up front for a feature. I guess what I am trying to convey as a fan is the simpler the better.
