.

I really dont think guys who have dumped tons of cash into the Thunders the way they are now will want to drop to this class..........Next thing is I would set the payouts around 200 to win and down.....who is gonna dump 20k into a car to race for that?

hmmmmmmm here is the sauble thunder car regular night payouts:
2010 Thunder Car
Feature Pay Out

1st $300.00
2nd $200.00
3rd $175.00
4th $125.00
5th $100.00
6th $90.00
7th $80.00
8th $75.00
9th $70.00
10th $70.00
11th $65.00
12th $60.00
13th $55.00
14th $50.00
15th $50.00
16th $50.00
17th $50.00
18th $50.00
19th $50.00
20th $50.00
21st $50.00
22nd $50.00
23rd $50.00
24th $50.00

and here is a classified ad for a sauble thunder car for sale:
Sauble #8 Thunder Car for sale

- Car comes complete turn key as raced

- Currently 2nd place in points at Sauble

- New GM 602 Crate motor this year- 11 races on it

- Car completely redone this year and set up by McColl's racing

- New Floater rear end with disc brakes

- Many extras

- Over $19,000 invested this year

- Asking $12,000 obo

So as I see it,you already have guys spending $19k and racing for $300. Kinda makes you want to shake your head. I realize the examples I gave are from sauble, not Barrie, but I am guessing some barrie cars are not far off those figures.Maybe a car claim rule would be a better option for cost containment.

The debate about purse money versus how much racers put into their race cars is never going to be won. Moonshine cars of the era cost three times as much as when they did brand new and were the first race cars on a track to make what NASCAR is today. What they won was peanuts. The deflection point of payouts versus cost to RUN a race car occurred back in the mid 1980's when I first got into racing (for a while) and hasn't changed much since. Costs to run a race track have skyrocketed faster than ticket prices can support along with competition for the entertainment dollar - namely digital electronics (games, internet, specialty events). And then there's other things, cost of living, mortgages, kids, having a life, kids, insurance...did I mention kids???

The only BUSINESS version of this is the Canadian Tire Series (as it relates to us) and ACT events that occur in Quebec. Those guys don't race with their own money, it's through sponsorship or they're done. Some teams select a few events (thus the lack of 20+ car counts at most events).

I can think of maybe a handful of teams in Thunder / LLM / LM that cover their season's racing "costs" via sponsorship. Any true racer has to be honest with themselves. If anyone is in this sport for the money - they're in the WRONG hobby 🙂
