In one of the most talked about races on the Canadian Tire Series this season, Barrie resident Mark Dilley raced to his third career win in front of thousands of fans that packed Barrie Speedway on Saturday night to watch the Wild Wing 300, presented by Independent Electric.
A beautiful night for racing and a huge crowd was the backdrop for the tenth of 12 stops for the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Saturday night. Fans were treated to some amazing action and left Barrie Speedway excited, impressed and most of all eager for the return of NCATS next season.
Mark Dilley quietly went about his night and found himself in the right place at the right time approaching a green-white-checkered finish.
The battle between race-leaders J.R. Fitzpatrick and Kerry Micks allowed the #9 of Dilley to shoot through the melee and capture the Wild Wing 300, presented by Independent Electric.
Point’s leader Scott Steckly led for the majority of the race before being forced pit-side after losing a tire. This would allow the #84 of Fitzpatrick to claim the lead while the #02 of Micks was running so smooth and appeared well on his way to a podium finish.
Micks and Fitzpatrick were battling hard all night and on the final lap Micks forced the #84 to spin out, allowing Dilley to sneak past both drivers and capture his third career victory.
“Well we got a little lucky on this night,” said Dilley. “But we’ll take it!”
Dilley’s previous wins came at Riverside Speedway in 2007 and at Cayuga Speedway in 2008. With the win Dilley now sits 6th in the overall points standings.
Jason Hathaway started 11th and was able to cross the finish line after Dilley to claim second place. Micks was able to keep his car on the track after the contact with Fitzpatrick and finished third. It was his fifth top-five finish in the last six events.
Don Thompson Jr. and Jeff Lapcevich rounded out the top-five. Fitzpatrick came home in ninth, while Steckly finished 14th in the 22-car field.
