Season Opener for Dakota Dunes Super Late Model Series
Full results follow story below.
The race teams spent Saturday watching the rain instead of turning laps
at the Auto Clearing Motor Speedway. The rain that continued to fall
all day forced the opening of the Dakota Dunes Western Canada Super Late
Model Series to Sunday afternoon. The weatherman did not disappoint as
the temperatures were a little on the cool side, but the sun was warm.
The delay did mean a few cars headed home to other commitments, leaving
16 cars for the Dakota Dunes opener.
Some unexpected results though as 16 year old Denver Foran from Edmonton
started the afternoon off for the Dakota Dunes late models upsetting the
veteran drivers as he timed in fastest with his #00 2013 Monte Carlo at
14.619 seconds. Greg Vangool was second fastest at 14.672 seconds in
the #77, 77 Signs Impala. Trevor Emond out of Leduc was third in
qualifying at 14.567 seconds in the #17 2013 Monte Carlo.
Jim Gaunt proved he is still a contender as he took the first Dakota
Dunes super late models heat race. This was the first time Jim’s new
#55 2013 Sky Financial Monte Carlo has seen the track, making its debut
with a win. The #00 of Denver Foran was second and #70 Trent Seidel was
third.
In the second Dakota Dunes super late models heat race, Greg Vangool in
his #77 77 Signs Impala was first to the line, chased by the #64 Noel
Dowler from Fort Saskatchewan. Saskatoon’s #14 Glen Hertzke was third.
As is standard for the Dakota Dunes feature, this week running the
Interstate Batteries 150, the top two qualifiers are given the
opportunity of going for a $1,000.00 bonus by starting at the back and
winning the race. Greg Vangool jumped at the chance, confident his 77
Signs Impala was up to the challenge. 16 year old Denver Foran from
Edmonton was a little more hesitant. Even with a little extra
encouragement from the crowd, the grade ten student decided he would
stick with starting from his earned position, which had him inside the
second row. Greg moving back put him on the front row, outside of Jim
Gaunt.
But, as with all Dakota Dunes races, there is a chance inversion as
well. Veteran racer and race fan Stan Caron rolled the dice for an
eleven, meaning the front 11 cars would be inverted. That put Red
Deer’s #11 Bill Royce on the pole, and Denver was now starting outside
of row five.
The #17 of Trevor Emond put an early jump on Bill Royce and led the
first dozen laps, before being overtaken by the #4 of Aaron Dowler.
Dowler led the next 27 laps, but sneaking up quickly through the field
was the #77 of Greg Vangool. Vangool overtook Dowler in lap 39 and
never looked back, leading the remaining 111 laps to the checkered flag.
There were battles all the way back through the field for position, but
in the end Greg Vangool took the $1750.00 first place purse plus the
$1,000.00 bonus in the #77, 77 Signs Impala. Jim Gaunt was second in
the #55 2013 Sky Financial Monte Carlo and the #64 Emco Chevrolet of
Noel Dowler out of Fort Saskatchewan was third. Edmonton’s #00 Denver
Foran was fourth and the #70 Elance Steel SMP Camaro of Trent Seidel
from Saskatoon was fifth.
In Brock Salvage Thunder Stock action, Mike Rea made it six in a row as
he captured the checkered flag in all three thunder stock races in his
#18 Dauo Auto Monte Carlo. The #81 of Barry Stefaniuk was second in the
heat and qualifier, while #22 Ryan Fredrickson was third in the heat and
the qualifier and second in the feature. Floyd Ransom finished third in
the feature in his #7 Impala.
Jared Reddekopp had an afternoon he won’t soon forget in the PartSource
Mini Stock Division as he picked up checkered flags in the heat race and
the feature race, settling for third in the qualifier in his #17 J&S
cabinets Honda Civic. #41 Jamie Tataryn was second in the heat race
with the #92 of Brennan Kirton picking up third.
Dennis Beck was first to the line in the qualifier with his #13
Saskatoon Sports Car Club sponsored BMW, with the #1 of Scott Barrand
taking up second and Jared Reddekopp third.
Following Reddekopp across the line in the PartSource Mini Stock feature
was the #13 of Dennis Beck and the #92 of Brennan Kirton.
Next racing action at the Auto Clearing Motor Speedway is Friday night,
June 14 with some local action as the SKL Trailer Pro Trucks, Brock
Salvage Thunder Stocks and the Budget Street Stocks put on a night of
racing under the lights.
The front gates open at 6:00 pm, with the first green flag at 7:05 pm.
You won’t want to miss this exciting night of racing.
