Season Opener for Super Trucks, Sportsman and Sask Legends
Full results follow story below.
Interesting. That is one way of describing the racing Saturday night at
Auto Clearing Motor Speedway. Although there was a reserved nervousness
with so many rookies on the track, the racers kept it clean. There was
little fiberglass to clean up, but safety officials had to deal with
three fires as the night went on.
The Big Bore Directional Drilling Super Trucks spent the afternoon
feeling out the track and their new Hoosier tires as they make their
first trip around the oval in 2013. At the end of the two 45 minute
practice sessions, times were pretty much predictable based on
experience. One stand out was Dexter Hucul, who made the jump from
Legends to super trucks this year. He was running mid–pack lap times in
what he described as a tank to roll around the track compared to the
legends car he drove the past few years.
Safety crews were forced into action as the first Sportsman practice was
drawing to a close. The #93 Burco Electrical Contractors Dodge Avenger
of Neil Schneider burst into flames as it barrelled down the front
straight, coming to a stop high in corner two with smoke pouring out of
the engine compartment and cab. A gasket had blown out of the oil
cooler, spraying oil on the exhaust. The resulting fire spread into the
wiring harness, taking heavy smoke into the driver cabin.
Neil would prove to be okay after some time taking in oxygen at the
ambulance. Practice was done though as crews had a heavy oil down to
clean up in the racing groove. With time trials next on the schedule
the track had to be safe, so all divisions had to give up their second
practice session.
The Mike and Ike Sask Legends got the night rolling with time trials.
Where most divisions run single car time trials for two laps, the
legends run four cars at a time for five laps. In the end the top time
was the #17 of Ira Laughy from Calgary at 16.255 seconds. Second was
Saskatoon’s Chelsey Wilson in the #13 1934 Ford Coupe at 16.545 seconds
and Calgary’s #42 Hugh Williamson was third at 16.595 seconds.
Matt Shirley started off what would prove to be a good night in the
points for the Midwest Combustion Sportsman division with a fast time of
16.239 seconds in his #12 Saskatoon Co-op Grand Prix. Tim Kammer
brought the #4 New Holland Monte Carlo up from Moose Jaw to time in
second at 16.428 Casey Randall from Melfort was third at 16.428 seconds
in the #07 Cervus Equipment Dodge Avenger.
To the Big Bore Super Trucks, Prince Albert’s Scott Lucas showed he may
be a rookie in the Super Trucks but is no stranger to ACMS as he timed
in quickest at 15.029 in the #27 Arrowhead Electric Dodge Ram. #44 Dean
Braham from Lloydminster was second at 15.229 seconds and reigning
champion #20 Neil Fitzgerald was third at 15.273.
Craig Katelnikoff made his presence known as he drew the first checkered
flag of the night in his #44 Ridge Riders Roofing Monte Carlo in the
Budget Street Stock Division. #34 Mike Schroeder was second and #36
Darrel Potts was third.
Craig did it again, winning the Budget Street Stock qualifier, again
followed by Mike Schroeder, but this time the #88 of Brad Wrennick
brought up third.
Craig and Mike traded places as the #34 of Mike Schroeder took home the
first ACMS commemorative checkered flag in the Budget Street Stock
feature race. #44 Craig Katelnikoff settled for second, while Ryan
Thompson brought the #33 Estrada Wines Camaro in for third.
The #32 of Adam Gilbert from Leduc took the checkered in the first
Legends Heat Race, followed by the #17 of Ira Laughy and #42 Hugh
Williamson. The second heat was taken by the #13 Bridge City Collision
Ford Coupe of Chelsey Wilson. Warman’s Blake Erb was second in the #21
Novakoski Quality Collision 1934 Ford Coupe and #24 Brad Blumer from
Kindersley was third.
The #17 of Ira Laughy took the first race in the second set of heats.
He was followed by the #42 of Hugh Williamson and the #32 of Adam
Gilbert from Leduc. The #13 of Chelsey Wilson once again bested the
group and took Heat Race 2B. She was followed by the #21 of Blake Erb
and the #24 of Brad Blumer.
The top three positions in the Saskatoon Earth Works Legends Feature
race went to Alberta drivers as Leduc’s #32 Adam Gilbert was first to
the line, followed by the #42 of Hugh Williamson from Calgary and
another Leduc native in third, the #22 of Michael Kipp.
In the Midwest Combustion Sportsman Division, Matt Shirley, who was
trying for a perfect night had it spoiled early as Moose Jaw’s Tim
Kammer took the heat race in the #04 New Holland Monte Carlo. Matt was
second in the the #46 Co-op Grand Prix and the #77 of Shane James from
Naicam was third in the Shane’s Welding Monte Carlo.
In the qualifier race, Matt Shirley picked up his first checkered flag
as he crossed the finish line a full second ahead of Tim Kammer. Shane
James was once again third.
Different race but same results as Matt Shirley took the commemorative
checkered flag in the Midwest Combustion Sportsman feature in the #46
Co-op Grand Prix. #04 Tim Kammer was second in his New Holland Monte
Carlo and #77 Shane James third in his Shane’s Welding Monte Carlo.
The familiar name of Jamie McClennon took the first Big Bore Super Truck
Heat race in the #33 Porky’s Oil Field Construction 2013 Silverado. The
#74 of Calgary’s Darin Guillet was second and #20 Neil Fitzgerald from
Wainwright was third. In the second heat, Brian Sparks took the win in
the #2 BDS Enterprises Silverado. #3 Len Zimmer from Red Deer was
second and #99 Doug Fischer Lloydminster was third.
Dean Braham from Lloydminster took the first race in the second set of
heats in the #44 Cave Inspection Silverado. #27 Scott Lucas from Prince
Albert was second and #20 Neil Fitzgerald was third. The #7 of Ron
Elder Jr from Wetaskiwin took the second heat, followed by the #3 of Len
Zimmer and the #99 of Doug Fischer.
Jamie McLennon took the first Big Bore Super Truck 100 lap feature win
of the year in the #33 Porky’s Oil Field Construction Silverado. Neil
Fitzgerald was a second behind in the #20 Fitzgerald Aggregates Dodge
Ram, with Brian Sparks from Edgerton filling the podium in the #2 BDS
Enterprises Silverado.
Next racing action at the Auto Clearing Motor Speedway is next Saturday,
June 8 as the Dakota Dunes Western Canada Super Late Model Championship
Series hits the track for the first time in 2013. Trent Seidel will be
defending his championship against a couple of dozen cars from across
western Canada. Filling out the night will be the PartSource Mini
Stocks and the Brocks Salvage Thunder Stocks.
The front gates open at 4:30 pm, with the first green flag at 6:05 pm.
You won’t want to miss this exciting night of racing.
