Tim Tolton Tops Twin 25's

This past Saturday night was Hillbilly Racing Night at Varney Motor Speedway. What started out a few years ago as somewhat of a gag, Hillbilly Racing has turned into a fundraising juggernaut for several drivers in the Stock 4 division. Through a season long raffle and proceeds from merchandise sold at the track, Hillbilly Racing has raised thousands of dollars for local area Special Olympic athletes. On Saturday night, the season-long efforts were finally revealed as several athletes were on hand at the speedway to receive a cheque for three thousand dollars.

Hillbilly Racing Night also means there is plenty of business to take care of on the track. With the Stock 4 field set for Twin 25 lap feature races by time trials as opposed to heat races, it would be #35 Tim Tolton of Guelph capturing the pole position for race #1.  The first of two features for the Stock 4's would breeze by without incident. Tolton would take the lead from the pole with #9 Dennis Cremasco of Arthur close behind in second. The top three would pull away from the rest of the pack as #51 Clark Hartman of Waterloo would stay up front with the leaders. In the end, Tolton proved to be too much on this night, cruising on to victory in the first Twin 25 lapper. Cremasco finished second with Hartman, #86 Nick Clarke of Mt. Forest and #88 Jason Tolton of Guelph rounding out the top five.

The second feature would not run as smoothly as the first. With the field inverted from their finishing positions in the first race, it would be #55 Dave Gray Jr. on the pole with #73 Scott Schlueter of Milverton along side. After taking the green, Gray and Schlueter raced door-to-door for the top spot as they came around to complete lap one when Gray would spin coming off the fourth turn. On the same lap, #7 Charles Embro and #77 Phil Givens would get together on the back stretch sending Embro spinning to the infield. The caution would come out for the first time bunching the field back up for the restart. Schlueter now held the top spot with #91 Bruce Moran in second. Schlueter would lead the next green flag lap but, Moran would get by on the outside down the backstretch on the next lap to take the lead. Moving thourhg the field quickly, Hartman and Tolton would squeeze by Moran on the sixth lap when Embro would once again have problems on the back straighaway glancing off the wall and bringing the yellow flag out once again. Hartman held the lead on the restart but, Totlon would challenge on the inside in turn three. The third caution would fly when four cars would tangle in turn two. Tolton would finally make the final pass for the lead just after the restart. Hartman stayed close in second as #88 Jason Tolton of Guelph moved up to third. As the field came around for the white flag, Cremasco would blow a tire on the backstretch while running in the top five. The green flag stayed out as T. Tolton sailed around for the win sweeping both Twin 25 lap features. Hartman finished second with J. Tolton, Clarke and #19 Tessa Cremasco of Arthur rounding out the top five.

Rains threatened on this night but, not before the the Street Stocks were able to get their feature race in. A late season feud between #19 Brian Wilson of Rockwood and #99 Jamie Hunt of Hanover came to a boiling point in the first heat race as Wilson would send Hunt spinning across the finish line under the checkers and up into the wall. The post race festivities would continue in the pit area where the two were parked for the night. The aforementioned proved to be a blessing in disguise for points leader #93 Bill Cole of Hanover. In the Street Stock feature race, Cole would take the lead from #06 Bill Keill of Chatsworth in the opening laps and never look back as he cruised on to victory uncontested. With another strong run late in the season, #38 Al Kusick of Durham finished second with #29 Aaron Martin of Brussels, Keill and #58 Kyle Fox of Hanover rounding out the top five. Heat races were won by Kusick (Hunt's win was taken away as a result of a disqualification), and Cole.

The rain would come as the Super Street Stocks were in the middle of their feature race. The Late Model feature was lined up and ready to go as well but, as the skies opened up even more, their feature would also have to wait. A wet track however, would not not stop the Trains from running their feature race. The slippery conditions did prove to be difficult to maintain traction but, patience proved to be the key as The Markdale Salvage Crushers layed in the weeds as The Pain Train and The Train Wreck slid through turn four and leaving an opening on the outside in the process. The Crushers would capitalize, squezing through unscathed and motoring on to a championship clinching feature race win.

This Saturday night will be action-packed at Varney Motor Speedway! The night starts at 5:00 pm with the Late Model and  Super Street Stock features that were rained out this past weekend. The night is also End Of Season Championship Night as the divisional champions will all be decided. If that weren't enough, intermission will feature an on-track autograph session, the Trains are back for a bonus night and, the season-ending VAN-CAMPER-FIGURE 8 race will cap the night off. While this weekend is the last night of regular racing, Varney Motor Speedway's 3rd Annual Fall Classic runs on Saturday, September 25, 2010 featuring invitaitonal racing for all regular divisions with over $15,000.00 up for grabs. Don't miss the final two nights of racing at Ontario's fastest and most exciting paved oval. For more information, visit www.varneymotorspeedway.com.
