SUPERCARS VNR: Whincup denied 100th win in epic battle
Shane van Gisbergen has once again denied teammate Jamie Whincup his 100th race win in a thrilling finish to the Red Rooster Sydney SuperSprint at Sydney Motorsport Park.
The Red Bull duo fought an epic battle throughout the 120 kilometre race with Van Gisbergen narrowly prevailing. Holden Racing Team’s James Courtney completed the podium in a triumphant return to the circuit where he was last year injured in a freak helicopter accident.
Whincup went into today’s race looking to become only the second Supercars driver after Craig Lowndes to bring up 100 race wins. Despite today’s second place, the six time Champion still holds a 98-point lead over van Gisbergen in the Championship with last year’s champion Mark Winterbottom 10 points behind in third place.

Tomorrow Lowndes will create history when he becomes the first Supercars driver to compete in 600 races. The 42 year-old already holds the record for the most race wins by a driver – 105 – to go with his six Bathurst 1000 wins and three Championships.
The Red Rooster Sydney SuperSprint will continue tomorrow with a 200km race at Sydney MotorSport Park. The race will be broadcast live and ad free on Fox Sports with replays on Network Ten and WIN TV in some reagional areas. Check local guides for details.
