Super Sunday was a day of redemption for Will Davison who gave himself a stern talking to before claiming victory in today's 300km race in the ArmorAll Gold Coast 600.

Davison played his cards well in partnership with Formula One driver Mika Salo to claim his first victory since May in front of a massive crowd on a stunning day in Surfer's Paradise for the international V8 Supercars round.

Saturday winner Jaime Whincup and four-time Indy Car champion Sebastien Bourdais were runners-up for TeamVodafone Holden ahead of the Orrcon Steel FPR duo of Mark Winterbottom and Australian Indy star Will Power.

Defending champion Whincup extended his lead in the championship to 218 points over Winterbottom with a further 27 points to his Vodafone teammate Craig Lowndes with three rounds remaining.

Davison's thriteenth career win was far from unlucky as they opted for a one-stop strategy with the flying Finn Salo pushing clear in a 56-lap opening stint.

They emerged from the driver change with the lead ahead of Whincup and withstood two late safety car periods to end a podium drought despite some impressive speed.

"It's been a frustrating last few months, and before I got in today I thought it could be our day," Davison said.

"I thought back to Phillip Island last night (where he won). I was really, really annoyed with myself after yesterday. I knew I could do a lot better. I had a walk on the beach this morning and came back to do a better job.

"I wanted to do well for Mika. I wanted to do well for the boys. We've had a fast car especially for the enduros and got nothing to show for it so this is great. I knew it would be a big fight to the end. I knew we were going to get a safety car. I knew we had the pace but I was unsure for how long.

"Yes it was redemption."

Davison, who says he has little hope of the Championship, is eager to push on for more race wins in the upcoming rounds in Abu Dhabi, Winton and the season finale in Sydney.

Whincup, who was on a two-stop strategy, was last to pit for his final stop and came out behind Tim Slade and Davison.

"We had completely different strategies than everyone else and stayed out. We lost a lot of field position in the middle of the race," Whincup said.

"I don't know if it completely showed but everyone was pretty ragged. I drove as hard as I could and made a few mistakes."

He was not disappointed with his double podium finish with his co-driver Bourdais winning the Dan Wheldon Trophy for leading international.

"It was a good weekend and it is a good team. Everything was very good. It was great for the team and a great effort for Jamie in his Championship."

Winterbottom said he had the chance to attempt an aggressive manoeuvre late in the race but thought better of it.

"On the restart after the safety car I thought I would have a go (to pass Whincup). I came up on the inside of the line. But I buttoned off. I could have bunted him off and I thought about it and thought I better control myself," Winterbottom said.

The Lucky 7 Racing Ford of Tim Slade and David Brabham were fourth, pitting extremely early and going off sequence in a move that gave them the lead with 20 laps to go - though they ultimately didn't have the pace to hold off the flying FPR and TeamVodafone cars that have dominated the season so far.

A long early stint from Brabham kept the car in contention for Slade to run it to the flag.

Garth Tander and Ryan Briscoe again carved through the field to a second Top 5 finish in two days, having started only 12th.

Craig Lowndes / Richard Lyons, Russell Ingall / Peter Dumbreck, Lee Holdsworth / Simon Pagenaud, Shane van Gisbergen / Jeroen Bleekemolen and Fabian Coulthard / Nicholas Minassian completed the Top 10.

The race featured five safety car periods however avoid the mass carnage of yesterday's race - the international co-drivers all doing a superb job starting today. 20 of the 25 starters finished, with 17 on the lead lap at the end.

The Norton DJR Ford of James Moffat and Peter Kox didn't go further than the race start, whilst the Team BOC Holden was sidelined with Stephane Sarrazin behind the wheel after only 18 laps when the car broke a suspension upright.

The rebuilt Michael Caruso / James Hinchcliffe #34 Fujitsu Racing Holden made it no further than their first stop when the car was released with only three of the four wheels attached, whilst the Jack Daniel's Racing entry of Tim Blanchard and Marco Andretti retired on lap 69 with damage.

The V8 Supercar Championship now heads to Abu Dhabi from November 2-4.
