There's an all-Kiwi front row at the MSS Security Challenge tomorrow after three of the seasons' quickest V8 Supercars duelled it out for pole position at the Rolex Australian Formula One Grand Prix.

On a rare occasion in recent times that a Red Bull Racing Australia Holden or Pepsi Max Crew FPR Ford were completely shut out of the front row, Aucklander Fabian Coulthard was rewarded for his great early season form with his first Albert Park pole position.

Last race winner and fellow Aucklander Shane Van Gisbergen will start beside him. Coulthard's team-mate Jason Bright was second on qualifying but an earlier practice penalty of two grid positions meant he will start from fourth beside RBAs Craig Lowndes.

Coulthard has been impressively quick in the test day and the recent Clipsal 500 in Adelaide in his Lockwood Commodore and finally took reward today. Likewise Bright has been very speedy but the practice penalty meant his Team BOC Commodore could not complete an all-Albury front row.

It was Coulthard's first pole position of his V8 Supercar career.

"We had a few sets of soft tyres to run and the track is unbelievable, as soft as a pancake," Coulthard said. "It's good to have a nice amount of grip. I never really saw a car on the track. I came across an Erebus car at one point but apart from that it was pretty much a dream run."

Bright missed the chequered flag in the second practice qualifying, otherwise he would have joined his team-mate on the front row.

"The cars have been quick and competitive all day so I knew we would be up there. The BJR cars are pretty good this weekend," Bright said.

"I didn't see the chequered flag there, it was hiding behind a piece of plastic. I was looking down at my dash and just didn't see it and did an extra lap. It's a bit disappointing that we didn't get the first BJR front row ever."

Fifth through 10th were Jamie Whincup, David Reynolds, Jonathon Webb, Scott McLaughlin, Will Davison and Mark Winterbottom.

Michael Caruso was the fastest of the Nissans in 12th, while Tim Slade was an encouraging 14th in the leading Erebus Mercedes.

Frenchman Alexandre Premat's session ended with rather more visible damage - the front-end of the Fujitsu Holden mangled after contact with Jonny Reid, who had swerved into the path of the fast-approaching Frenchman.

The first race of the MSS Security Challenge gets underway at 11am tomorrow.
