Morrow Overcomes For First Victory of 2012
By: Spencer Lewis
Innisfil, ON – Saturday July 7, 2012: In the midst of a season that has already seen Chris Morrow denied victory via contact with fellow competitors and freak mechanical breakdowns, July 7th represented a much needed change of pace. After sustaining significant front end damage in an on-track incident at Kawartha Speedway the night before, Morrow’s team rolled into Sunset’s pit area after the evening’s practice sessions had already ended. Without the luxury of practice to test the newly repaired hotrod, ‘Mr. Excitement’ impressed through qualifying, winning a heat race and looking to be every bit as strong as his 7 track championships would indicate. Morrow would start the 30-lap A Main from third starting position, snatching the race lead from Dario Capirchio on a lap-10 restart. From there, Morrow would open up a half-straightaway lead for much of the event, before finding himself challenged late in the race by 2-time feature winner Mike Bentley. The pressure would peak on the final lap of the race, with Bentley pulling to Morrow’s rear bumper. Entering turn-3, Bentley would make contact with Morrow’s rear bumper, though the leader would avert possible catastrophe with a highlight reel save, holding on for his first win of 2012.
The Super Stock feature saw #72 Randy Rusnell take his second checkered flag of the year followed by #17 Nick Roth and #28 Paul Maltese.
Mini Stocks had part time competitor #79 Nicole Podewils (2011 Sunset Mini Stock Champion) picking up her first win of the season with #99 Rob Krystal and #3 Warren Paxton finishing second and third behind her.
