Good Note about the Slaughters that all should hear.

On June 10 2000 my father and I attended Sunset as we usually did on Saturday.  We decided this Saturday to hop on the bikes and go for a ride with both of our girlfriends.  All and all, it was a great day.  After the night was over we went into the pits and talked to several drivers before we headed out to the parking lot.  My bike was blocking my dads in the parking lot so I jumped on my, fired it up and moved ahead a bit.  A moment later I heard both of the ladies who were with us screaming for me.  I turned around to find my dads bike lying on an angle with his left leg propping the bike up and preventing it from falling on him.  Now I assumed he slipped on the dewy grass as his bike was very heavy and naturally wearing riding boots on wet grass did not help.  I kicked out my kick stand and ran over to my dad to find that he was in the middle of a heart attack.  A race fan and his wife who were paramedics immediately heard our call for help and performed CPR while someone else had called an ambulance.  The Slaughters had heard the commotion and came over to offer an assistance.  The ambulance arrived and my dad and his girlfriend were rushed to hospital were he died en route.

The Slaughters did not know who I was.  I went to school with Jr. and had math class with him but that was it.  The stored by dads bike for me so I could ride home and offered any assistance they could.  When they found my dad had died the family sent flowers and condolences and I heard that they even attended the wake.

Several days later the family met me at the track so I could pick up my dads bike out of their storage.  This my fellow race fans is going beyond the call of duty for a patron.

Welcome back Steve, I hope you can bring back the happy times.

Hey Big man!! whats happenin! Man, I remember that night very clearly, how sombre it was after the ambulance left. You guys were always regular faces at the track, always parked the bikes in the same spot. It was the least we could have done, although, as sad as it is to say, I havent seen you much since then. If you are around this year, make sure you grab me and say Hi!

hey Steve.

I was out several times last year and thought I wouldn't be coming back this year.  But after everything I've heard I'll be there on Saturdays again.
