Awesome pics. Racing just looked like so much fun back then. Seems now unless you are building a car and spending big money it just isn't fun.

Was that the old A&W on Bayfield St. beside the Sunoco station pictures?

Kanefreak, It could be me since I remember always wanting to sit right down by the fence. I loved the smell of burning valves, rubber and breaks. Good thing Sunset had such a good safety fence then....sarcasm now off. lol

JT, yes I do believe that is the old A&W. My aunt worked there right about the time of that picture.

Ernie and Jt  That is 100% the A+W as i lived directly across the road from it growing up.My mom worked there as a cook and the servers all roller skated out to your car parked out front with your order and hooked it on your window. Those were the days.

that would be awesome to have your food served like that....guess I am too young for any of that being born in 1983 and all!

I just found this web site and wanted to tell the others who were wondering that I own the actual Superbird that was a Sunset Speedway pace car in1971 and 1972. I'm the 4th owner and am currently restoring it back to its factory original limelight color. It had many coats of paint when I got it in 1990:
1. Original Limelight
2. Labatt's 50 Gold (1972 pace car colors)
3. Plum Crazy (painted by jackson's for the first owner)
4. Black (painted by the 2nd owner)
I'm looking for original photos of the car when it was a pace car in either of these years. I'm planning to re-letter it as it was in 1970 as the pace car but need more photos to get all the details.
