By Angie Rinaldi & Mike Ferrell (Sept 3, 2011) – SOS fans enjoyed an
entertaining Sunday afternoon at Brighton Speedway with a race car show,
dunk tank, Pig Roast and Bouncy castle for the children among the
activities available to enjoy before the nights racing action would get
underway. A full field of 24 Sanderson Tire & Automotive Southern
Ontario Sprints hit the track for night two of the Labour Day Classic
Extravaganza. The #9nz of Harvard Daniels certainly had the longest trip
of anyone that night coming all the way from New Zealand to team up with
the #11T of Jamie Turner to make their first starts with the SOS. #51
Lee Ladouceur had his eye on the Championship title with a 78 point lead
going into the final event over #5 Keith Dempster. Ladouceur would just
need to have consistent night to win his second title in as many years.
Heat races Sunday night would go to the #01k of Mike Kruchka, coming on
strong with the SOS in the first heat. #57 Charlie Sandercock, rookie of
the year contender and Brighton Speedway latemodel stand out, took the
second heat. With #0 Glenn “The Ohsweken Flyer” Styres taking home the
third heat win.
Sunday night's redraw for the Sprint Cars took place on the front
straight where a select number of children pulled for the top 9
positions on behalf of the drivers. As luck would have it the children
pulled the #0 of Glenn Styres and the #07x of Dain Naida for the front
row again, with home town favourite Charlie Sandercock and the
“Joyceville Jet” Rick Wilson making up the second row.
In a replay of Saturday night, Styres broke out to the early lead
followed by Naida, Wilson and then Sandercock. On lap 8 the four drivers
started to hit lap traffic and Naida once again was all over Styres. The
two swapped the lead a few times with Styres on the bottom and Naida in
the middle until Wilson came through on the high side and made it a
three car battle for the lead. It took Wilson a few laps but he
eventually worked his way around the two and took over the lead. Styres
remained second but with lap traffic the two remained close with Styres
just waiting for Wilson to make the slightest mistake. Meanwhile the
battle for third heated up with Sandercock working his way underneath
Naida and the 01K of Mikey Kruchka starting to work Saturday night's
winner Naida over for fourth. As the laps wound down, Wilson was
flawless in lapped traffic and picked up his first win since May and his
21st victory at Brighton Speedway. Styres came home second and
Sandercock got his first Sprint Car podium finish coming home third.
Kruchka got by Naida in a drag race to the line to finish fourth and
fifth respectively. Points leader Lee Ladouceur finished in ninth
position securing his second Southern Ontario Sprints Championship and
becoming only the second driver in SOS history to win back to back
championships, duplicating the feat achieved by Glenn Styres in 2007 and
2008.
