I really don't want to get in a huge debate about this, but Doug, I've been going to the races since my parents started taking me at about 4 years old. I've been to every asphalt track in Ontario as a spectator over the last 30 odd years and I've also raced at several of them; please don't tell me what I "should" be doing to promote racing. And no, I didn't miss the fact that car counts are down other places as well, the two tracks that were being discussed were Peterborough and Mosport, not any others.
I guess the main point I disagreed with was your claim that Mosport is improving. During the off season Mosport replaced their Race Director and head Tech Inspector; now perhaps I read too much into this (I don't think so however), but it seemed as though these two were made scapegoats for Mosport's poor season last year. Now as the end of this season approaches the car counts at Mosport are the lowest they've ever been, across the board, and as the season goes on the numbers have declined, not grown. So where's the improvement? All that seems to have happened is two decent men's reputations have taken a knock and the downward trend has continued.
I'm quite concerned about the direction racing is going, but I really don't believe looking at things through rose cloured glasses is the answer. If six to ten car fields are the new norm, where is the next generation of race fan going to come from? I'm afraid a lot of people are going to take the advice you offered me and move on to something else; you may prefer 6 to 8 cars over 20, but I'm guessing most don't. Everyone has, and is entitled to, their own opinion and I respect that, I really do, but I don't think pretending everything's great is the way to go. I agree that racing probably isn't likely to return to it's past glory days, but that doesn't mean we should stop hoping it can - and in my opinion if we all just shrug and say "Oh well this is pretty good" that's exactly what we're doing.
Midpack,
I don't think you were supposed to present your argument with cold, hard facts. It appears as if you have left them either speechless or they are unable to answer your questions and that is no easy feat.
