(Plymouth, IN) You can throw all of the sayings that go into short track racing into Saturday night's racing at Plymouth Speedway.
The Modified feature ended the night on a high note with a green-white-checkered finish. The 22-car field kept the field green until lap 10 when a spin happened in turn one. Cautions then bred cautions – four to be exact with two on restarts – and with three to go, it was a battle to the checkered flag. Frank Marshall won the race with last week's winner, Tommy Beezley II second and Adam Williams taking the third position.
“I thank the fans for coming tonight, because without them this wouldn't be possible,” said Marshall after the 20-lap feature win.
The USAC 600 Restricted Class feature found a woman at the top of the podium for the third time in Plymouth Speedway history. Sydney Arnett took the checkered flag after the 15-lap features where only four yellow flags were waved. Last week's winner, Garrett Saunders finished second and Nick Katrakis claimed third place.
“This just goes to show that girls can do it too!” exclaimed Arnett.
After starting in the second position and finding himself at the back of the pack early in the race, Dennis Freeland took his #3 Thunder Stock to the top of the racetrack in the dry dirt and caught the leaders within a couple of laps. With only two cautions in the 15-lap feature, Freeland finished in the top position when the checkers flew. Randy Lambert pulled in a second place finish while Bryce Shidler took the third spot.
“Yeah, I found that the top worked for me and it got me the win,” Freeland explained.
Dawson Stealy found himself on the top spot of the podium after leading all 20 laps of the USAC 600 Open Feature. The defending champion in this class, Sara Elrod, found herself in third place at the end of the race with Craig Ronk in the second spot. Stealy had a chance to thank his sponsors, family and friends for helping him with his race car.
It was a trip to Victory Lane for David Short in the Super Street 15-lap feature. Nate Payton took second and Bob McLean came in third. Eight cautions plagued this feature with several spin-outs and debris issues. That didn't bother Short though as he nabbed the win. He was excited to be racing and at the track.
“This was my first feature win in 15 years,” Short beamed.
It was a beautiful night for racing and there's still some work to be done to make the track at its optimum for racing. The track techs are working hard to provide the fans and drivers an ideal track and it should be even better for the third week of racing on May 11. Street Stocks, Thunder Cars, Modifieds, USAC 600 Sprints and USAC 6000 Restricted Sprints will be back at it at the fastest dirt track in Northern Indiana.
