Cayden Lapcevich Scores Hat Trick in Lansing

Eight year old racer, Cayden Lapcevich scored A-Main wins in all three classes that he competes in this past weekend in Round Three of the Region Four Championship Series at the Memorial Day States Race event held this year at the Capitol Quarter Midget Club in Lansing, Michigan.

Cayden went into the event as the point leader in Jr. Honda, Jr. Stock, and the Light Mod class after strong runs including two victories in the first two events of the season held at Columbus, OH and Indianapolis, IN.

Time trials were the first order of business Saturday after practice and Cayden was definitely up to the challenge breaking his own Jr. Honda track record set in July 2007 with a fast lap of 6.38 seconds. He then strapped into his Jr. Stock machine and put in a lap of 5.98 seconds for his second track record of the day; shattering the previous mark of 6.14 seconds set in July 2007 by Eastern and Western Grands Champion Justin Peck of Indianapolis, IN. After struggling with the handling of the car in Light Mod practice, Cayden put down a lap of 5.97 seconds; good enough for fourth fastest in Light Mod.

Having time trialed all three cars directly into the Sunday main events, Cayden was able to breathe easy and watch some of the racing action as the lower mains got under way Saturday afternoon.

Sundays warm temperatures and sunny skies brought perfect track conditions and having been well rested Cayden was well prepared for a tough day of racing.

After the invert of the top four cars from time trials, Cayden rolled from his outside row two starting position for the start of the Jr. Honda A-Main when disaster struck. While coming for the green and fighting to get to the bottom of the race track he bumped wheels with another competitor, sending him hard into the outside turn four wall, throwing the drive chain from the gears and causing damage to the front end. Cayden was pushed to the pits where his father, Jeff Lapcevich along with some other competing fathers made quick repairs to get him back on track where he assumed his new position at the tail of the field for the restart. Cayden quickly went to work heading to the front and by lap 30 of the 35 lap event moved into the lead where he remained unchallenged for his first Major A-Main victory.

With only two races between that and his Jr. Stock A-Main, Cayden had little time to celebrate. In less than an hour he was back on track, again in the fourth starting position to take on the rest of the Jr. Stock racers. Not wanting to find himself in the wall again, he fell safely into fifth position on the bottom of the race track and began his charge to the front. By lap 10 he had passed for the lead and cruised to his second win of the day.

After watching some of his friends race in the Sr. Stock event, once again Cayden got buckled in; this time in his Light Mod machine to race for the third time of the day. Children in Light Mod range from 7-16 years of age and the class is arguably the most competitive division in Quarter Midgets. From his second starting position, Cayden took the green on the outside row but quickly made his way to the bottom in third position. As the laps began to fall it became apparent that Cayden’s ride was incredibly fast and race fans who came to see some great action were in for a treat as the top five cars justled for position. The third grader from Caistor Central School found himself up to 2nd, then back to 5th, then up to 3rd; a pattern that would repeat again and again as the race went on. With a restart at lap 20 of the 40 lap race, Cayden found himself in 5th, but as the green fell he dropped to the inside and moved to fourth trailing Justin Peck, Frankie Nervo of Stowe, OH, and Vinnie Miller of Shelby Twp, MI. Cayden continued his charge to the front and by lap 30 had made his way around Nervo and Miller and set his sights on Peck who had opened up a six car lead. With 5 to go the Grimsby, Ontario resident had made his way to the back bumper of Peck’s machine. Cayden followed for a lap then completed his charge, passing Justin and taking the checkered for his third win of the day.

With the victories, Cayden increased his point lead in all three classes. Next stop for the busy youngster is Round 4 June 7 & 8 at the Miami Valley Quarter Midget Club near Dayton, OH.

Cayden is thankful for his support from Fastline Motorsports, B&J Electric, Reinhart Trailers, and Joel Robinson.
