OHSWEKEN SPEEDWAY STARTS 16TH SEASON THIS FRIDAY!
by Tommy Goudge (May 18, 2011) – Following one of the wettest springs in recent memory, Ohsweken Speedway staff members are working feverishly with one eye to the sky in hopes of getting some cooperation from Mother Nature which will allow the 16th annual season opener to take place this Friday night. The “Frostbite 75” presented by Engler Machine & Tool is on the card this week for the opening round of Friday Night Thunder, and all of Ohsweken’s regular divisions will be in action, including the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Cars, Lighthouse Tattoos Thunder Stocks, HRW Automotive Mini Stocks, and Pierced Parts Bombers.
CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING SPRINT CARS
The Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Cars headline Friday Night Thunder for the fourth consecutive season in 2011. Dave Dykstra won 2 features and the Corr/Pak title last season, and will try to become the first driver to repeat as Corr/Pak champ. Dykstra will have to deal with the likes of Glenn Styres, Travis Cunningham, ‘08 champ Keith Dempster, Mikey Kruchka, Jamie Collard, Dain Naida, Kyle Moffit, Jim Huppunen, sophomore drivers Mitch Brown, Jamie Turner, and Chris Steele, and many more. The Sprint Car division always has a few rookies each year, and that trend continues with drivers like Jesse Costa, an 18-year-old from St. Thomas who is moving up from Micro Sprints.
LIGHTHOUSE TATTOOS THUNDER STOCKS
The Thunder Stock division has a new title sponsor, with Lighthouse Tattoos on board in 2011. Jamie Cox won the championship in 2010, but is cutting back his schedule this year, leaving the title up for grabs. Many drivers will have a shot at their first Thunder Stock title, including Ryan Dinning, Lee Winger, Mike Thorne, Chris Dickie, Phil Nyssen, Rob Disher, Colin Court, and Jeremy Bean. A healthy crop of rookies is ready to race, including former Bomber drivers Kacey Huffman and Brittany Gyokery, and Cory Turner, son to Sprint Car racer Jamie Turner.
HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
HRW Automotive has signed on as title sponsor of the Mini Stocks this season, joining an exciting division. Trevor Goulding has indicated that he'll be back to defend his 2010 championship, but he'll have challenges from two time champ Abel Castelein, 2010 rookie of the year Jake Brown, Mike Taylor, Mike Evers, and Steve Hess, among others. There’s also a whopping 9 rookie drivers registered for Mini Stock competition this season. Many of those new drivers are moving up from the Bomber division, including Karl Sault, champion of the Bombers in each of the last two seasons.
PIERCED PARTS BOMBERS
The Bomber division championship is wide open this season, with Karl Sault, and several other regulars moving to other divisions. Several familiar names remain though, including Sarah Rutherford and Trevor Roszell, while new drivers such as Kathi Dickie, and 14-year-old Dale Gyokery will join the fun in Ohsweken’s entry level division. The Bombers also have a new title sponsor this year, with Pierced Parts lending their support.
