TAKING THE LONG ROAD
By William Gold, AST PR Director:
For the last few seasons the Scott Safety Alberta Sprint Tour racers have proved their dedication to 360 sprint car racing time and time again. Teams have made the 1,100 kilometer haul to take part in major events at Skagit Speedway in Washington State, and then the bar was raised as the AST was present in Knoxville, Iowa for the famed Brodix Tournament of champions, the distance of 2,200 kilometers. Once again the AST is proud to announce that a new travel bench mark will be set as an AST team ventures to the 4th annual Canadian Sprint Car Nationals.
The Arrow Express sponsored event is held at Ohsweken Speedway in Ontario, Canada located 3,300 kilometers from the Scott Safety AST series home base of Edmonton, Alberta. Gord Kynoch, pilot of the #15 Fountain Tire racing machine will represent the AST in Canada’s largest sprint car event. The AST driver will add to the divisions represented at this event which includes the SOS, ESS, ASCS Patriot, NRA Invaders and the ASCS SOD. Having the AST represented at the Canadian Sprintcar Nationals will also be the first time 2 Canadian series are represented at this event.
Kynoch is currently leading this season’s AST points and is hoping for a solid performance at this weekend’s championship event. “We got put behind the 8-ball down in Great Falls with the Can-Am event” states Kynoch “I have to give credit to Kelly Miller and Miller Bro’s racing, they have been consistent all season and it all comes down to this last event”. The #44 Miller machine is only 1 point behind Kynoch and it all comes to ahead at Castrol Raceway on Sept. 20th for the 2008 championship night. “It was kind of a last minute decision to go to the Canadian Nationals” says Gord, “We had thought about it a few times during the season and finally figured why not?”
Kynoch, whom will not only be carrying the AST banner to Ontario, will be supported by Fountain Tire Spruce Grove, Norwest Cooling Systems, Bergoid International, CJ's Power Products & Performance Centre, Parts Stop, Eliminator Down-Hole Tools and KW PRO. “I am fortunate to have sponsors and a crew that is willing to help out with this, it’s going to be a long haul and any help is highly appreciated” says Kynoch.
Tommy Goudge, the Southern Ontario Sprint association media officer was delighted to hear of the AST racer attending the Nationals. “Its amazing that Kynoch will be coming, that makes 2 Canadian travelling series that will be represented in Ohsweken”. “That just adds a little more Canadian flare to this event”. Ken Pelkie, whom is the GM for Ohsweken Speedway and director for the Nationals, was just as excited to hear about Kynoch making the long haul. “This will definitely be the longest any competitor will tow out for our race”. Pelkie extended his appreciation by reserving the Wild Card spot for the AST driver in the “Dave MacLeod Memorial – Mr. Sprint Car Challenge”. Pelkie continues, “It’s great to see a team make this extended effort to support Canadian sprint car racing”.
